Just spent the past year of my life in the capital of Taiwan ROC, Taipei. The status of this entity as a country is debated, but as it functions mainly separate to the PRC, I thought it deserved a separate thread! Moved back to Sydney now, but how yall doing back there?
I'm actually going there for a few days at the beginning of May! I'm really excited. Hoping to check out what Taipei and maybe some other places have to offer. Since I'll only be there for 4-5 days, can you recommend anything that is a must see? Also, what is the weed/hash situation like? Is it obtainable?
If you talk to anyone from Chinese mainland, they will tell you Taiwan is part of China and people will hate you if you say otherwise, most of them at least. Taiwan and mainland are very much intertwined actually, more each year.
Pretty sure the Taiwanese consider them just as separate from China as Chinese consider Taiwan theirs. It's a really complicated situation. The people in both lands have completely different ideas. Personally, if the Taiwanese people want to be a separate nation, what right does China have to say, "No! You are Chinese too!"
Cool. If any of you are down south in Pingtung, give me a shout There is a great crowd here in Taiwan, and we now have annual Rainbow gatherings. this coming year (2011) will be year number 3. And ya, we have our own president, we're a democracy (an admittedly corrupt one liek so many nations), have our own stock market adn teh only reason we dont officially declare independence is the threat of genocide form China. Despite the current prez's ideas of selling freedom and socialism for profit, we are independant of the mainland, and have been basically forever. Occupied by some, but never the Chinese. Complicated, perhaps. Why? because no one has the testes to stand up to China. But Taiwan is an independant country in every way shape and form except the thousands of missles pointed at us telling the world otehrwise Anyway, that is deppressing and just a shit situation. Ona lighter note, in about a week Tiawan turns 100 years old! happy 100th! peace and love (and independant freedom lol)
Oh Taiwan! That is my favorite place in the world I think. From all the places I have been, Taiwan has something that really attracts me so much. So I have been everywhere there down, I go and stay there one month on chinese new year on 2009, I landed in Kaohsiung travel down to Pingtung, I met there a very nice guy from Canada giving surfing courses and owns a hostel down there! After visiting the south beach of Taiwan (an amazing natural place), night on candina (I don't know how to spell it, but it's like a night market in that place) up by train to Taitung, I lovely small quiet city, after a few days to Hualien also very relaxing place, continue to the north I really didn't stop on the north port of Taiwan but I tried the whiskey is produced in that part of Taiwan, even if wasn't that good! So arrive in Taipei for a few days, and later back to the north through the west coast stopping in Taichung for a few days and back to Kaohsiung airport. I have been a few more times there but in business trips not that relaxing way I have been the first time! Also I think Pingtung and the South Coast is the best part of Taiwan!
LOL.. I think its overrated. I went in May and find it so so only. Even for the food. Its just a city...
In the next season i will also be go for the Taiwan tour because its my favorite place and i would recommend going with a tour group because they will have everything planned out..such a nice place for the visit..
