Learn lots of chords, memorize all the places where E A D G B E are on the fret board, then when you're trying to figure out the song (if it had chords) find out the bassline and do all the chords you know that has that bassline.

I find that if you play along with a song, it may help your ear training. Esspecially if you know the names of each note that your playing. I did this alot, and soon enough i was able to recognize more chords by just hearing them. It may also helps if you know scales and intervals and all that.

And ya, as ebene said, its good to figure out the bassline first.

Here's how my Guitar teacher showed me.
Get Tab of a basic song you want to learn.
You should have the song on album, CD, Computer, 8trac, casset, etc.
Play the song and tune your "A" string until it sounds like it blends with the song.
Then tune the other strings to your "A" string.
Read the tab and play the melody. over and over and over and over While the song is playing.
Def Leppard was my first stab at this back in the 80's
If they need a fill in i'm ready!! hahaahh

That's what I did with sax, bass, and percussion. Works great. Just practice and figure it out, and don't rely on tabs. GOOD LUCK!
