Hi everyone My boyfriend, his brother, and I will be leaving LA for Humboldt county shortly after the new year. We have some $ saved and we're looking for affordable places to stay preferably in Arcata. We looked on CL but only found apartments that require background checks. We're good people with bad credits due to having to runaway from home at a young age. Are there any local listings for cabins or places rented by owner instead of agencies? Cheap hotels/bed&breakfast? Artist houses with cheap spare bedrooms/attics? Farms looking for live in workers? We're also looking for work. We'll do anything involving plants or animals. I have experience teaching Spanish, however I dont have a degree. My boyfriend and his brother can do labor. We are musicians and we play gypsy music as Rainbow Familia. Thanks for reading! Any info would be much appreciated.
It is a college town. Google the college for bullitin boards etc. It's a head friendly area if you can manage to hang a while. Google for youth hostels. Good luck.....
Thx for the info. It looks like we're going rain or shine with a little help from our friends. Is it really impossible to find a job? Coming from LA I feel as if it might be a little easier than it is here.
Well, there are a lot of unskilled to partially skilled laborers already in town. So it helps if you have a needed skill. There is always trimming/care taking, and a fair number of businesses are tax shelters. Tutoring, paper editing and the like have some demand. But really, you cannot say a small town has better job prospects than a sprawling metropolis.
Well that's a relief...since I have a tutoring background. I'd heard of the trimming aspect, but was not sure if this was real or a myth. Good to know its real...and to know that there is some economy. Thanks again for your helpful replies
There are lots of college kids here looking for jobs as well so they are indeed in short supply. Neither housing nor jobs are impossible too find though. Best of luck! The Arcata vibe is absolutely amazing.
What about Eureka? Some people tell me it's great and some people tell me it's terrible. What are some of the safer areas?
I disagree on the car aspect. Especially if you are in Arcata or Eureka. There are easy bike routes all along the coastal area, and truthfully - once you get inland the hitchhiking options are great as well. Public transit is lacking in the rural areas of the county but not wholly inadequate. I went to HSU and yes - there are a lot of college kids competing for the jobs and housing - but - there are an equal amount of old heads and off grid housing available for the hippy minded willing to live a little different than they would in an urban area. Remember things like work trade for housing - you can find this a lot with farms. Also - sublets abound as in all college areas. Enjoy -
