I am, like many more people here it seems, trying to figure out where to try out communal living.

I want warmer weather (than Sweden), and some big city i can afford to travel to for concerts once in a while. Im mostly into reggae, psychedelic rock, folk music, bluegrass, country, soul, ehh some from most styles maybe.

Which cities have the coolest scenes happening?

I figured, somewhere near San Fransisco maybe. New york is to cold, and La seems to be diffucult to travel in.

I also think a big community sounds good.

Which is the biggest in california of the ones that is not strictly religious or with prohibition against psychedelics?

Considering "The Farm Community" in Tennesee also. Or maybe something that is more partyish. I can get into clean living when i grow a little older.

    Any other suggestions?

well, the Lafayette Morehouse is quite near San Francisco, we are ~60 people. I'm not sure what the biggest groups in California are. We are not a religious group.

Searching the web a lot. The biggest counter cultural communes with long history seems to be, black bear ranch, The Farm in Tennesee, Twin Oaks, and Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville CA.

    Have I missed any?

Cant figure out the chances of getting some cind of visum to enter to work in a commune. Probably no chance at all maybe. Then I would have to be satisfied with just spending the years I plan to study in the us.

My plan was to work in a commune, a while before i start to study. Then work as teacher maybe try both in communes and cities.

Here is what I have for long-lived American intentional communities - these are just the secular (non-religious) groups that I have found which are still in existence:

    The Colony, 1940
Hog Farm, 1965 (Wavy Gravy & Co., Laytonville, CA)
    Twin Oaks, 1967
    Rancho Linda Vista, 1967
Morehouse, 1968 (Oakland, CA & Lafayette, CA)
Table Mountain Ranch 1968 (Albion, CA)
    Black Bear Ranch, CA 1968
    Libre, 1968? (Greenhorn Mtn, CO)
    The Farm, 1971
    Lake Village Homestead, 1971
    Monin's Rill, 1974 (~Santa Rosa, CA)

FWIW Lafayette Morehouse (where I live) was one of the largest 'counter-cultural' 60s groups - 155 people at its peak, we are about 60 people today.
