Hello all! So, I have found myself in a work program during which I will be camping for long periods of time in Arizona!!! So excited! However, I am only used to camping for a weekend or less in the Illinois climate, so I was wondering if anyone could provide some tips, like a little survival guide!:afro: Thanks!
My Advice Is Do Not Even Remotely Consider Pitching Your Tent Somewere That Is Not Within Easy Walking Distance Of A Macca's Or KFC, Both Are Air Conditioned And Serve Freshly Brewed Early Morning Coffee.... Sleep The Night In The Tent, Spend The Day In The Aircond With Wi-Fi... Cheers Glen.
Scorpions... Watch out for scorps. They won't kill you but the sting hurts like hell. Otherwise just have lots of fluids and you will be fine. I wish heat were a problem here, it's cold as H*** right now.
What part of AZ? This time of year you'll be fine in the desert and in the higher elevations it'll be way to cold.
What part of Arizona does make a big difference . The nothern part is the Colorado plato , is high , and sees snow in the winter . The southern part in mostly desert and is nice the winter . Summer is hot . Arizona = arid zone , it is dry. Always take water . I work in the heat , you can dehidrate quickly . desert rat
This site covers some of what they are doing in 4 of the AZ forests . http://www.4fri.org/ , and the site for the game and fish . http://www.gf.state.az.us/ Wear bright cloths if your in an area with hunters . desert rat
Always remember large rattlesnakes are common in some areas and darn good eating...yummmm...be alert, don't miss a good meal! ....or be one...lol
If you feel really hot put a wet a clean towel, put it in a cooler if possible let it get cold and then take it out and put it around your neck. Also holding ice tubes on your waists can help to cool you down. Drink lots of water.
I was forgetting the critters . Snakes are all over the state . The rattle snake is the only venomous one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattle_snake in the southern part of AZ is the gila monster , you cant hurt them of have them for a pet there protected by law . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gila_monster . There is this little critter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse_spider ,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scorpion , and the black widow the other bad spider http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latrodectus_hesperus . I can post more about Arizona , if asked . desert rat p.s. this guy is bad news http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bark_scorpion
Shhhh DR, I wasn't trying to scare him off but tempt him with the gormet opportunities here.:sunny: I did see more black widows growin' up in Texas , but the biggest was here the size of a fat blackberry.
Most of the critters are more afraide of people , and problems can be avoided with common scense . Different parts of the state have different climates and different critters . desert rat
i camp out in florida, and i did the summer here (yeah way diff climate/critters than arizona, but we got them just the same) water, alwayz have water bug spray (again i live in florida, there's like 10 diff kinds of mosquitoes among other viscious blood suckers) SHADE, use a tarp and create some shade somehow if you live by a place that you can take a shower, do it every day that you can. you'll be smelling like butthole at the end of everyday from b.o. and it sucks when you dont take a shower for the day trust me you could get a battery operated fan definately get sunscreen higher the better
One more thing , being able to speak a few words in Spanish is good . Many people hear know little or no English . desert rat
It would be nice if the o.p. of this thread would state what part of AZ he/she will be camping in and what kind of job this is . I cant think of many jobs that you need to camp out . There are the hot shot fire teams that put out forest fires . Salt River Proj. has people that go out and messure snow , to see how much water will be filling up the dams . There are the people that set up in the fire towers and watch for smoke . desert rat
I will be in Tucson camping out at night and trail building by day. It was a good tip to shake out my boots and stuff. I bet spiders like sleeping bags... I hear it's going to be a rough job but I'm excited for the experience. I hear there is a place called the petrified forest to go to.:sunny:
