Decided to actually do some carvings, this was my first attempt.. kinda fucked it, rushed into it and underestimated the importance of those initial cuts! Also went to deep into the eye sockets, so couldn't get much detail into the eyeballs without poking them out This was my 2nd attempt - much better I think, but still a load of room for improvement. Took this one down to the pub where I work(I live in an area famous for witches, so Halloween is the business equivalent of Christmas here so we were decked out to hell and back with decorations!). Like the lighting, gives a better feel to the guy, even though it's over exposed(pic taken on a phone). Really enjoyed doing these guys, gave me a break from taking my artwork so seriously.. I'd almost forgotten why I'm doing all of this, cos it's a shitload of fun. Perfection's a target, but not THE target. Anyway, gonna get myself one of those electric carving thingies, got a block of fake ivory my friends dad gave me that I wanna have a do at - it's too hard and slippery for hand carving.. can see myself losing more fingers than I actually have if I do.. But yeah, get your own posted!
Those are very impressive pumpkins!! I carve pumpkins almost every year. I've always been afraid to try one of those 3D pumpkins. I'm more of a outline/cut out type carver. I've done it enough times that i think its time to graduate. I may try a discounted pumpkin next time i go to the store this week. I would think that it would be a good idea to put a light bulb of some sort inside the pumpkin while you're carving it so you can see how bright it would be when the thing is lit. also maybe so you don't go all the way through.
Those are super nice, MM! Years ago, I waaay underestimated how hard it is to really do a good job carving a pumpkin. Somebody asked me, "Can you carve a pumpkin?" I'm like "sure...no problem! Give it here." Godalmighty! It was awful. Looked like something a fumble-fingered child (that couldn't even use scissors yet) might do. So, yeah...you are super talented. :2thumbsup:
Haha, thanks all And yeah for sure give it a go, I used some hand gouges, a carving knife and a few toothpicks for the details. It's really nice stuff to carve, and there's plenty of time lapse vids and tutorials on youtube to get you started. As far as the lighting goes, I just carved a face and let the laws of physics do the rest. I poked a few extra deeper holes in after it was all done(eye slits especially), but it pretty much sorts itself out
