Does this defeat mean anything for the Republican right?

I’ve been reading for sometime a number of political analysts talking about the problem the Republican Party has with demographics.

As the republican Senator Lindsey Graham has put it ”We’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”

The other problem some have noted is this the role inequality is playing within politics. - In their 2006 book Polarized America, the political scientists Nolan McCarty, Keith Poole and Howard Rosenthal plotted the voting behaviour of elected representatives and their constituents, and compared them with the rise in inequality. They found an overwhelming link: as the US economy became more unequal from the 70s, its Congressmen and voters became increasingly extreme – and their incomes became an ever more reliable guide to their affiliations. The richest fifth of Americans are now 2.5 times more likely to vote Republican than the bottom fifth, a trend that McCarty says didn't exist back in the 70s. (Aditya Chakrabortty –The Guardian)

And the resent financial crisis has if anything intensified inequality.

So what direction do you think the Republican Party will go?

I'd say about 50% of voters are motivated by greed and religion. The other ~50% vote for Obama.

I think they'll stay the course, be sore loosers, make retarded threats, and do their best to keep his hands tied from making any real changes for the next 4 years. All in all, nobody wins.

Cons got their clocks cleaned because of their "fuk'em" ideology. But they'll continue to beat that dead horse again next election. No cure for stupidity.

This was the last election they will have any reasonable chance to win by being primarily the party of the angry old white man. According to exit polls, 71% of Latinos voted Democratic, along with 93% of blacks. That's where nearly all the population growth is, so the Republicans will lose by a bigger margin next time if nothing changes. They could become a party that is no longer relevant on the national level.

One thing that will almost surely be different next time; they won't have nearly as many billionaires writing checks for $20 million, for TV ads. Those guys thought they were buying the election, and got nothing for their money. They won't make the same mistake twice.

    I love it!

They will have to have an internal civil war to decide that. It should be fun to watch. :lurk5:

If they're smart, they will retrench to a platform of conservative financial policy, while leaving social issues alone. I have no idea if they will do it. That might cost them most of their Southern religious voting block.

I don't see an easy path for them.

They all support the same bullshit once you get past the left/right talking points and smoke screen issues, so I don't see what difference it makes at all. It's all nonsense. It's good to see many people are moving past the partisan bickering and realizing it's a dog and pony show, however.

There are issues far more real and important than this. This is the stuff you hear on daytime television, which is basically mindless entertainment and gossip.

Even after getting spanked, the cons are just as partisan as they were two days ago. There's no cure for stupid.

They will continue their obstructionist policies and become even more ananchronistic as time passes. Obama is going to have a rough time getting anything done because the House is still full of the ass kissers to the 1%. One of the most important issues this time is that now Obama and not Romney, will more than likely get to fill the coming Supreme Court positions.

Some republicans were saying last night that what their party is doing has not worked AND THAT THAT THE PARTY HAS TO BECOME MORE INCLUSIVE. So in other words, fake being open to minorities, gays and the middle class and fool people into voting for them on issues that they basically will never believe in their "hearts". You can't just SAY things and make them true.

They got what they deserved and what worries me is the possibility that the fringe-right will resort to the Kennedy solution as they did in the 60s.

Until the republican party returns to a moderate position, such as Eisenhour espoused, nothing will change for them,as I see it. Leopard--spots?

Let's see how they handle the upcoming budget deadline. If they fail to reach compromise and all the automatic tax increases kick in, the Tea Party's core supporters are going to want some heads on a platter. ;) These conservatives in congress are under a lot of pressure to produce, no matter how tough they talk to the media. It's all about the money, and those automatic tax increases (and defense budget cuts!) are wicked.

This is not a fun time to be them. :bomb:

They would have already done it, if they could find a way. The Secret Service knows their shit. ;)

Long-term, they don't have a choice. It's just a matter of time. How long will it take them to get so tired of losing that it overcomes their hatred of change?

Considering how close this election looked yesterday, I can't believe I'm saying all this today!

The rich have always voted Repub and always will. By rich I mean the business and merchant class. There are class divisions in America and they will vote for their interest which is preserving and increasing wealth at the expense over everything else. Its ingrained over generations from birth. Us vs them. Sad but true. Its not 100% We have people like the Kennedy's but they are an exception.

A more important question is what is going to happen to America.

Both parties are controlled by special interest groups.

Unlimited campaign contributions mean that the agendas of the wealthy trump everyone else's

No one is trying to represent all of the people fairly

while I like the democrats better than the republicans, they both suck

I saw a video of the dnc convention.

People were holding signs that said "middle class first!"

    aka, fuck the poor people

seems to me like everyone is out for their self interest

a big part of why the us is polarized

Merchant class? So, you're rich if you own a small store? First I've heard of it.

I try my best to ignore all your posts, but sometimes I have to say, enough is enough.

Have you ever said to a pregnant rape victim, face to face, that there are "more important issues" than whether the law requires her to give birth to her rapist's baby and raise it to adulthood? I doubt if you would have the balls to do that. If you did, I would assume that she would slap the shit out of you, and probably stab you in the throat with the nearest sharp object.

For those of us who have real lives and deal with real-life problems on a regular basis, we have no patience for those to whom everything is theoretical.

There's nothing more annoying online than people who take themselves very seriously and have no clue what real people are dealing with, and have no compassion for them. Shut the fuck up about "what enlightened people know". You have no idea.

no middle class first is what gets them elected.

but i think the republican party is severely fractured as a result of the tea party bullshit.

there are real differences between democrats and republicans on a range of issues

both parties, however, are composed primarily of rich people representing competing wealthy interests

the republicans are overwhelmingly a party controlled by big business interests. they throw a bone to conservatives every once in a while, but despite the rhetoric, I doubt that they would ever try to overturn roe v. wade. it would be political suicide.

karen, I disagree with pr on a lot of things too, but the criticism is a little unfair, and the fairly graphic description of violent acts that might be committed against him is uncalled for.

No, no... I'm not upset at all!!! I LOVE giving lots and lots of my personal information to the government, buying mandated insurance that I don't need, and having my freedom stripped away...

We need to attract the latino vote and the young women's vote. The mandates and platform are pretty solid.
