how many here were raised in vegetarian familes? what was that like? if your family wasn't vegetarian, how many became such at a young age? tell me about it.
My parents are against me being vegetarian. They really don't like it... but I refuse to eat anything they try to feed me.
I wasn't raised a veg, but became one at around second grade. My parents said it was "a phase" and tried to force me to eat meat. Finally, after a few years, they accepted it. I guess thats understandable though, because 7 year olds usually say a lot of things they don't mean. I really paved the way though, because my brother became a vegetarian with ease. My mom was just pissed when we both still lived at home because she didn't know what to cook. Oh well, everythings dandy now
My parents were vego's . . . then when I was born they gave into the temptation of animal flesh *shudders*... The funny thing is though, Mum's always complaining that I'm vego, and she was one herself! Absolutely insane....But they're both pretty cool about it I spose, except when we run out of vegies and I have to eat a peanut butter sandwitch. meh....
When I was 6 I had a major ear infection, which our family's homeopathic doctor prescribed raw-food diet for me, to help fight further infections. For about 6 months I was pure vegan, but only for the ear thing. I became a "real" vegetarian at age 20. . . .just a year ago. . .
I became a vegetarian about 15 1/2 months ago. The only one against it is my sister. God only knows why. It doesnt affect her in any way, and I never bring up the subject of vegetarianism anymore. Shes the one who always brings it up, and then we get into a fight about it, and she bitches at me for being a veggie. Last year when I became a vegetarian, she told me "I bet you won't be a vegetarian next year." Shes a bitch (ok, expressing family conflicts here, but i cant help it ). Then when I first started out being a vegetarian, she asked me if I really cared about animals, and I told her yes, and she said to me "well, i dont believe you." I don't understand it. I really don't. I'm fine with her being an omni, its her choice, and I'm not about to attempt to change her beliefs as I know shes already firm about her views on meat consumption and such. I just don't understand why shes constantly trying to change my views, constantly starting arguments, and just being an all-around bitch about it. I get a phone call from her every few weeks/months. Usually sometime within the conversation she asks me "so, are you still a vegetarian?" She totally got pissy about me becoming a vegan when my parents and I went up to boston over the summer to visit her. I dont know why either, since we brought up vegan food in a cooler, and soy drinks as well so we wouldnt have to bother her or her boyfriend with cooking or anything. Then when they cooked a vegetarian dish without my asking, and decided to put eggs on it, I wouldnt eat it because naturally, the eggs have touched it. And since I dont eat veggies that meat has touched, why would I eat veggies that have touched something from a chickens butt hole? So, then she got pissed at me again. Whatever. My parents are cool about me being a vegan though. I've been a vegan for a few months now.
became lacto veg at 13, got into the Krishnas and all that... have had a few slips over the years, but the majority have been veg. been more than two decades....
I've been vegetarian - or trying to be vegetarian - since I can remember. I haven't always been successful, but I followed my father's lead when I was young.
my parents became vegetarian about the time i was born for health reasons... i am so glad that i was brought up that way...when me and my sis (two yrs older) would go to friends houses when we were kiddies they would ask us if we wanted a slice of ham or somethng..even when i was four i would say no but my sis would cave in..we're all still vegies..so's my younger bro...and id like to yhink that if i were brought up in a meaty household i would still be vego. i was always healthier than my friends..not so much anymore cos i drink and smoke, etc..
I was raised a vegetarian. Both my parents had hippie or at least exploratory tendencies and both became involved in a spirutual path that promotes vegetarianism. I deviated once or twice, but since I was 11-12 I have been steadfast in my beliefs/dietary choices. I'm not a vegan ( I do eat rennetless cheese, and butter/milk, etc,) but I don't eat eggs. Strangely, although I've never really eaten meat before, I have had cravings for it this past year or so. Not sure what it is...
i have a friend who was raised entirely vegetarian, everyone in their family is and has been vegetarian all their lives. hes never had a single taste of red meat, and tried chicken once
