Does anyone have a good idea for organizing your recyclables? We don't have pickup here and I don't have a lot of room. How do you get organized?
ooh i've been thinking about this recently too.. i also could use some advice. (hoping my user cp will now alert me to this thread if anyone replies... )
i use 55 gallon drums... one for aluminum cans, with a can crusher mounted above it, one for plastic bottles and such, one for glass, and one for those soup cans. i keep a large heavy duty trash bag in the aluminum one so I can just pull the bag out, tie it and toss it in the truck anytime. the glass gets heavy, but 2 people should be able to lift it into a truck pretty easy. we called around, this one place near us takes anything metal, no matter what the condition. the glass goes elsewhere, as does the plastic. this to me is the only solution I could find that seems to work for me, of course, I keep a small container in the house and separate everything when i get out to the back porch off of our barn. We burn our paper, and are working on building a better composting setup for our food scraps. i think it should be mandated that townships provide a place to drop off all recyclables at their buildings.
It should be mandatory! It's ridiculous that it's not. My fav grocery store has a section for recycling though which is good. THanks for the tips.
Lowes might have plans for a home recyling center on-line. Or ask at www.woodworking.com and people will point you to many plans. Or type "recycling bin plans" into Google
i live in a tiny apartment, and have no transportatio other than my 2 feet. recycling is supposed to be mandatory in my city, but people ignore it. including my landlord. no one recycles in my building, and when i inquired about the pick-up day, eric (the landlord) looked at me like i was nuts and said he didn't know. i called the city to find out, and they can't even figure out if they're responsible for my building or not. in the meantime, i'm forced to throw out cans, paper, and other material that should be recycled, because no one knows who is supposed to be picking it up when, and we have no place to store it. saving it up & driving it to a center is oviously impossible for us since we have no car. there must be something i can do, isn't there?
