I just started doing macrame with hemp cord, making jewelry and keychains and stuff. I'm getting kind of good but my hemp keeps fraying when I work, and sometimes the cord is thicker/thinner in places than it is in others. Is all hemp cord like that, or is this an issue of quality? How can I pick better hemp when I'm shopping for supplies?

I was told to use body butter or lotion (I guess any kind will work, pick your favorite). Work it on the string as you go, keeps the ends down. May also try hairspray but it would need to be washed, and destroys the ozone... yadayada. But the lotion drys and (if you use the right kind) won't leave any residue. Sounds crazy but it really works.

I always liked hemp that has the bumps and such, cause it makes all my pieces unique. I am lucky enough to have a shop that is local, that sells them at a decent quality. Where are you buying your hemp? Online or at a craft store? A lot of big named craft stores like Jo-Ann or Michael's don't sell good quality hemp. At least to my standards...
