i don't think that's right. it's been a long time, but i think the way you figure this out would be to multiply the chance of survival of each attempt together. so with the first box you have 99/100 chance of surviving, the second box you have 98/99, and so on. for ease of math, i'll pretend there's only 4 boxes left, and figure out the odds of survival from there. with 4 left, there's 3/4 chance of survival, 2/3 with 3 left, and 1/2 with 2 left. 3/4 x 2/3 x 1/2 = 6/24, or 1/4 chance of opening 3 of the last 4 boxes unscathed. which makes sense, because you're basically choosing which of those 4 boxes you don't want to open, and you have a 1/4 chance of guessing correctly. so, without doing the math, i would guess that you actually have a 1/100 chance of opening all but the killer box. you are right in that if you get down to 2 boxes left, your chance of survival opening one of them is 50:50.
Chances are you're right Underware. I barely passed a course in statistics, and that was by luck. But, I was only thinking of the first choice being 1 in a 100 of blowing up. So I think the $100,000 is a pretty good bet.
What is in the box that will kill you . Posion , a bomb ? If you know you could use a form of perection . desert rat
x-ray every box, take it to airport, if theres bomb inside, you go to jail, if not, you have money and then you can try more times as you will be able to get out for cash
My first thought is chances are whatever is going to kill you is probably a different size, shape, texture, or density than $100,000 cash, and with 99 boxes containing the same size, weight, shape, texture, and density of cash you could probably find the outlier pretty easily by just picking up the boxes and shaking them or something.
Just thinking, but if some evil billionaire is hatching some plan to test human nature..fear against greed. He's probably not wanting there to be too many loopholes. He's risking 9.9 million usd, so he's probably gonna plan the job out.. Unless he's a banker. In that case the 100k's will be in cheque format. And most likely bounce.
Yeah I thought about that as I was typing it, so I added the picking up part. I mean, you've gotta be able to at least pick it up right? I guess if you forgo the possibility of cheating the game then I'd open like 5-10. It'd sure be nice to have a million dollars.
one is sufficient for me. leave the rest for somebody else. steve jackson games used to have a page on their site called warehouse 23 (this was many years before there was some stupid thing on tv called warehouse anything) that was filled with many more the 100 boxes, each one containing something different, something odd, and anyone could suggest additional contents for additional boxes. to me that sounds like a lot more fun then just money or a bomb. they could contain absolutely anything. the focus was primarily on alien and fantasy objects for "treasure" in desk top roll playing games. and of course included objects that were themselves booby traps in their own odd and origonal ways. THERE i might be interested in taking a chance on opening more then one of them, just for the curiousity hell of it.
i do wish we knew more about the nature of the killer box. because think of the bonfire you could build with 99 paper-filled boxes, assuming one wasn't going to release toxic gas into the air or something.
