    Anybody running Virtual Box?

I'm looking for an XP emulator so I can run old software, but I hate downloading this stuff then finding out I'm in over my head and end up screwing up my system.

I know there are some versions of windows that will run as a live cd . They run from the cd /dvd drive and not form the hard drive . The only one I know of is Hirens boot cd , I have never used it , so I dont know any thing about . http://h33t.com/search/hirens+boot+cd This is an I.S.O. file you down load it and burn it to a disk , then you let it boot from the cd drive . Most distros of Linux will run as a live cd /dvd that can be installed on the hard drive only if you want , but most wont run windows programs . http://distrowatch.com/ If you do want to give Linux a try , start with Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ http://www.ubuntu.upc.edu/index.php desert rat

i thought you can use windows compatibility thing to make xp programs run, right-click installer and go to properties.

as for virtualbox, its easy. click the New button and follow wizard.

    - make sure you have the windows xp disc in

    - when you set-up, don't make it too big! you need about 20% free HDD space at all times, and room for using your system (files, programs, program data etc). but needs to be big enough for xp, i don't know what size.

    - do you have enough ram?

    - install Speccy to see your normal temperatures when using computer, compare with using a VM, it might get hot, so best to keep host system use minimal.

This software needs a 64bit usb driver for an output device, no one makes the driver, and it will not be made by the software company. The program runs, you just can't use the output device.

I don't have an XP disc, it came installed on one of my computers that died...although the hard drive is probably good......

I have 4g of RAM, 589g free on the hard drive.

Why would my cpu get hot? It's just another program, can't be any worse than some games?

I'm all for that, as I've been a full time linux user for 8 years now. Only problem is, is that not all windows apps will work via wine.

Another problem is, most people have enough difficulty installing a new app, let alone learning a new operating system and trying to get wine to work.

I used to be a heavy linux evangelist, now I don't care about what people use. It works great for me, and that's all I care about.

Most people aren't interested, motivated, or skilled enough to do it.
