This sounds similar to a Mayan end of the world prediction. It would be nice if in 35 years seven billion people were more affluent, though.
This is just addressing religious fundamentalism. Religion will continue as all people seek meaning in their lives. But it will be of a different nature than what the majority of it is now.
Defeat? This an absolutely childish way to depict it, like it's some kind of struggle. Oohh the grand struggle between a "system" of belief and a "system" of disbelief. Can you imagine how fucking boring and pointless this world would be if we all believed in exactly the same thing? Atheism will "WIN" the day that everything in the universe is known by everyone, and if the universe is infinite - well then, don't hold your breath. I can imagine human beings arguing and killing each other 1000 years from now because one sect of scientists believes that a certain, as yet unobserved behavior of a subatomic particle, exists - while another does not.
Don't worry, atheism can't survive in severe hardship. The impending energy apocalypse that the religiously right are especially blind to will insure God's will indefinitely. It will be back to cutthroat basics, survival of the fittest, misery and hardship dulled only by the delusional fantasy of a divine connection.
I think it's fuckin stupid to want the world to go atheist, like things are actually going to change or something. Pull your heads in people, it's not wrong for anyone to believe. Assfucks.
You don't have to accept (it is advisable though) but you have to at least tolerate those who happen to affiliate themselves with a religious organisation. Even fundamentalists have their rights, unless they infringe on other peoples life. That some of them happen to do that in present day does not mean you are righteous in discriminating all religious people's beliefs. It just makes you look like a scared obnoxious person that gets overly protective and defensive on your own position. That is understandable, but by stigmatizing and verbally terrorizing your 'opponent' so to say makes you not one bit better than the religious people you are agitating against.
There's a distinction that isn't being made here, and that is between religion vs. theism. Most young people nowadays who are rejecting religion in droves, are nevertheless theistic. Even if in a sort of default, unquestioned way. They couldn't name one characteristic of god, or anything that god actually does. God does nothing, god is nothing...but, somehow it still exists as a comfort watcher. Same thing with the afterlife. They may not believe in the bearded man watching over the pearly gates of heaven, anymore. They don't know where they go, but heck they go somewhere goddammit. I see a parallel between that, and the fact that most young liberals nowadays who disown religion still very much attach default, unquestioned importance to the religious ritual of marriage. To them, both marriage and God have become secular phenomena, if that makes any sense.
Well you are right but I think it is kind of obvious that not everyone who does not affiliate themselves with a particular religion falls in the atheist category. This amount of people have been growing rapidly since the 60's I think.
Yeah. The "I'm not religious, I'm spiritual." crowd. Ungh. There's also the phenomena of the type of atheist who believes in aliens or lizard illuminati. It's like they've refused to believe in a skydaddy but then they just fill that hole with something just as ridiculous. Oy! It's why skeptics keep trying to make the point, atheism doesn't equal skepticism. Not all atheists are rational.
Well I'm an atheist who can't get over the fact that there's a show called "Ancient Aliens". It would be funny if I didn't think these nutjobs were serious. It blows my mind as much as any religious program, it's hard to get over how fucking idiotic people are. There is a fundamental problem when the majority believe in absurd nonsensical bullshit. Faith kills, faith can derail reason and progress. Praying instead of taking action in the face of impending danger can be disastrous.
Faith doesn't kill anymore than "progress" or "reason". People kill. They just pervert Faith, reason and logic to justify it.
atheism by it's very definition is the lack of belief in a deity. no more, no less. one can be atheist and still believe in anything they want, unless it's a god.
