I'm a traditional chinese studying aboard in USA. I born in mainland and received traditional education like confucianism and daoism. My grandmother is a member of community party. My parent participate in high-speed train project(you may have heared about it).
I just come to here for half year and found a lot american have misunderstanding of china. So, if you have any question, feel free to ask.
I cant guarantee what I present is the real china but much closer than most of yours.

Americans have a borderline retardation level of ignorance about China. They've seen three generations of Cold War propaganda and lack the intellectual rigour to question it and discover the truth.

The biggest lies they believe are probably the ones about Mao Zedong. The US media characterises him as an incompetent, genocidal maniac, when nothing could be further from the truth. What they don't know is that the majority of deaths under his leadership were because of famine caused by natural disasters.

Historically, China has never been able to feed itself and during Mao's early rule half of the country's agriculture was wrecked by drought and flood. That is what caused the food shortages, not political policy. Due to the Great Leap Forward however, massive irrigation projects were developed and flood defences were built, significantly increasing rural stability and production.

Mao was possibly the greatest leader of the 20th century, almost doubling life expectancy (thirty five years average in 1949, sixty five years average in the 1970s), improving health and education, eliminating homelessness, taking land from the rich to give to peasants, and laying the foundations for an impoverished, technologically backwards nation to become a world superpower.

Deng Xiaoping's lies don't fool people who know the real history either. Mao will be remembered long after that joker is forgotten.

The Chinese Communist Party has lifted more people out of poverty than anybody else in history. Education, healthcare, employment and housing are human rights too.

Compare that to America's interferences in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Columbia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Granada, Cuba, Saint Kitts, Angola, Namibia, South Africa, Lesotho, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Nigeria, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Western Sahara, Libya, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, Sauda Arabia, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, East Timor, Laos, the Philippines and so on... and you'll find that your country is guilty of nothing less than a holocaust to protect and improve the profits of US corporations.

...and you sit there complaining about Chinese knock-offs of consumer products. Americans like you are the reason that the world hates the US and so many people were jubilant when 9/11 happened. You have no concept of human rights and no knowledge of the criminal actions of your own government and military.

Americans are the most spied on people in world history. More than the Russians under Stalin, the Chinese under Mao or the Germans under Hitler.

Get off my planet, you fucking stupid nationalist troll.

    this thread deteriorated really quickly..

OP, what type of place in china are you from? Big city? small village, country?

I'm curious about the environmental protections in China because of the current smog situation in Beijing. I imagine parts of China are still very beautiful and pristine. I hope so anyways. I've always thought it looked like a beautiful country.

Yes, natural disasters, like (probably intentionally) incompetent agrocultural disaster, caused directly by mao.

China is a bloody fucking disaster. Has been since european trade began.

    LOL.

    There are no environmental protections.

Especially if you know the right people, and/or have much money.

And then there's the state sponsored disasters, like dams and such.

*edit* ohh damn, tripple post, I'm sorry.... that's just me being a fucking stupid american though, can't hold it against me. Maybe if I was a party member, I wouldn't tripple post (and if I did, I'd be purged and have my organs implanted to save aging party bosses).

according to the artist i mentioned the chinese government makes every effort to censor sites and key words on an ever increasing basis...this can change daily

filling the internet with chinese nationalists in an effort to hide this fact is also high on their priority list..i know a few people that went there and told me this as fact..one is a lawyer whom i believe and trust...

i dont have confidence in those posts in skippers thread

I didn't word that right at all. I know there's no environmental protections. I suppose I'm just curious about the op's opinion and personal experience regarding the environment in China. The wilderness of China looks so beautiful in pictures, I'm just curious if there are parts that have been untouched by China's rapid industrialization. I assume there are; its a huge country.

    The US cultural ambassador.

Well where I used to work there were a lot of Chinese students. They echoed the sentiments of the thread. You don't imagine the artist 'would say that wouldn't he' and he might be a tad partisan?

    I imagine there are.

They do have a ministry of environmental protection. How effective that is, I don't know.
