I saw pants just like these in a catalogue but I thought they were a bit expensive, so I decided I'd disect a pair of old jeans and see what I could do by myself. The thing is, I've never sewn before in my life, so this is kind of an accomplishment for me and I'm proud of how they turned out, even though they're not perfect. Tell me what you think.

They look great. Can't tell it's your first time sewing. I'm going to get out my new serger this afternoon and see what I can accomplish. I've wanted one for ages, but now that I have it, it looks a bit intimidating.

Not a moron at all. Actually you need both. Or else just a regular machine. You can't do everything on a serger. Look inside your teeshirt. See how there is a seam and then the edge is overcast. A serger sews the seam, overcasts the edge, and cuts off the excess fabric along the seam all in one motion. For years I've been sewing the seam and then overcasting the edge with a zig zag stitch. If there was any extra fabric to be trimmed, that had to be done as another step. A serger does it all at once. I made some side panels for my little guy really quickly this afternoon. I can't wait to get some fabric and try a whole outfit on it.

Roses*~ Those are great! Sidepanels are my least favorite things to make. You did an awesome job. They look so cute on you too.

Lucy*~ You don't really need a serger. If you really love sewing and make tons of stuff I would get a serger. You need a serger if you want to sell your clothing because it makes a nice professional seam on the inside. But like Dakota's mom said a zig-zag stitch on your regular machine will help your seams not to fray.
