I used to believe they all (except for Cobain) died young because of accidental drug overdoses. Now I'm not so sure. They all were critical of the government. And they were in a position to have their opinions heard by millions. Anyone have any doubts about how and why they died so young? If so, what's your theory? QP
They were all notorious drug addicts and/or alcoholics and became famous at a young age and probably didn't know how to deal with it. I'm not sure about Morrison but both Hendrix and Joplin were known to have severe depression on top of that. If the government was targeting musicians due to speaking critically, I'm sure Bob Dylan would have been their primary target.
I guess it’s just that they all died during their prime – that’s what seems odd to me. The 27 Club. I hear that a lot. Plus they were easy targets. They would talk to anyone. Dylan seemed like a more private dude, so he was not as vulnerable. Many musicians use hard drugs, but don’t overdose until they’ve reached fortysomething (or more) years. So was it just bad luck? And Kurt Cobain’s suicide note seems more like a farewell letter to the music industry, than a goodbye letter to his family. I don’t know. I once believed as you do. But now I have a few doubts. QP
No, this theory doesn't hold water. Janis, Jimi, and Jim (I don't know much about Cobain) were not political, verbally. Of course they hated the government -- everyone did -- but they expressed their feelings through music, which the straight world didn't grok. They were not like Lennon and Dylan. Even Dylan wasn't nearly as political as people made him out to be, as he makes clear in his autobiography.
killing people young only cements their status as cultural icons and people of significance, exactly the mistake they made with che guevara, it doesn't silence them, just makes them martyrs and means that their message reaches a lot more people. if you really wanna discredit a rock musician whose critical of the government, let them die of old age, let them slowly wither and become ugly and politically out of touch, let their music become bland and lack the fire of youth. Let people begin to notice that their attitudes to capitalism don't really square with the enormous piles of cash they're sitting on. thats how you kill a rock star, with time and patience. iggy pop's on my TV as an old guy with a pot belly selling car insurance. Johnny rotten's flogging country life butter. the governments aren't stupid enough to kill off rockstars young. just let them grow up to become parodies of themselves, that's the true death of the rock dream. "hope i die before i get old" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hzQsvxtLTM"]John Lydon Country Life Commercial - YouTube for contrast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svC2XlPFW1g&feature=player_embedded"]Johnny Rotten Interview - YouTube the only one i believe is that i don't think sid killed nancy spungeon, not because of some governmental conspiracy to discredit punk (again, let it age naturally, and it'll do that itself) but because she was flashing heaps of money around in a hotel full of desperate junkies, money which disappeared and is reported as re-appearing in the posession of a dealer, tied up with her hairband, who promptly vanished. police find a hotel room with a dead junkie and another catatonic one (he was on cancer medication and methadone, didn't even notice nancy's dead body in the room) and thats case closed: "fuck 'em, just a pair of scagheads." and of course, sid's death was a conspiracy, in that he conspired with his mother to have enough heroin for his suicide delivered to him.
If they were going to kill celebrities for badtalking the government back then the Smothers Brothers wouldn't be around today. They just got their show yanked.
