Coke Bottles are transforming Manila's rural areas. These plastic bottles are now being viewed as a green, cheap and sustainable way to light homes. In rural Manila where homes are often built so close to each other that they have no windows or natural light these bottles are a God send. With electricity unaffordable or unavailable for many families they often have to work, do chores, and eat in near darkness. Now there is light

Coke bottles are the major component of an innovation called the "Solar Bottle Bulb." And these bottles are popping out of roofs and illuminating the lives of many Filipino's.

Well you could use a glass bottle, and just re-crimp the lid.

But if it hails it could break. And plastic is easy and cheap to replace, and shouldn't need replacing for years anyways.

That's really awesome, it looks like it works better than some commercial sun prisim type lights that you see in the US.

I'd be interested to see how it would work on an insulated roof, with a 2-litre bottle. It looks like something that could be used in alternative building other places and in other climates, to good effect. For instance, it would work REALLY well in snowy places because of all the reflection, if the bottle could be tall enough to use with insulation (and a high-proof alcohol solution, or some sort of other anti-freeze). Could be good for earth-burm, shipping container, or other alternative structures, as well.
