Naming usually goes to the highest corporate bidder these days. Some of these stadiums change corporate names from one year to the next. Sometimes the name is changed for a particular televised event and then changed back to the previous name. These are (or were at one time) real ones:

Overstock.com Coliseum (Has a nice cheap surplus sound to it.)

McAfee Coliseum (the virus software dude)

Russell Athletic Field (an athletic equipment company)
potential slogan: Support Russell. Be an Athletic Supporter.

    Next up:

    Preparation-H Stadium
    Cruex Field
    Absorbine Jr Civic Center
    Vagisil Convocation Center

Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, built when they tour down Mellon Arena which was also called the Civic Arena, nicknamed the Igloo

First Niagara Pavilion used to be Post-Gazette Pavilion, used to be Starlake Ampitheater

I like original names. Corporate naming sounds like shit.
I mean come on.. Starlake Ampitheater, named after the lake next door and the night sky? Versus First Niagara. A fuckin bank. Jeez.

At least that retains some of the original name so that it doesn't sound like a different stadium each year or month or day or hour.

Then you have issues when a place is named after a politician or other public official who ends up getting convicted of crimes. This happened to one stadium but I don't remember which one. They had to change the name.

    Convicted Felon Stadium

    http://1045theteam.com/bruno-stadium-should-be-renamed/

"'The Joe' is named after former New York State Senate majority leader Joe Bruno - who secured the $14 million needed to construct the stadium.

But those were the good old days.

Back in January of 2009, Bruno was indicted on eight counts of corruption, including mail and wire fraud. The indictment basically accuses Bruno of defrauding New Yorkers from 1993 to 2006.

Call me crazy, but a stadium shouldn’t be named after a convicted felon! It just doesn’t sound good for our area to have our minor league baseball team playing in a stadium named after a guy that ended up being a dirty politician.

He got busted for abusing his power and misappropriating tax funds – which is essentially taking advantage of taxpayers – the taxpayers that paid for the stadium."

I actually like Houston's stadium names Reliant Park (Reliant Energy Company) and Minute Maid Park (Minute Maid Juice Company) but yeah in general the corp names are shitty at least they put a nice ring to'em with the "park" in my city. Oh well billboards with vending machines, over priced food and seats!

In "sports brands" is these parasitic pricks call it, thats the biggest lie of the lot.

Yes, I would rather these "brands" close. They're absolutely fuck all to do with sport. Its a load of crap run by absolute vermin, who couldn't give a fuck about sport.

These teams/ whatever they are would never close. Because they only get into financial difficulty because their owners take out hundreds of millions.
While at the same time, becoming more and more plastic, profitable and full of shit.

Sooner or later it'll be Coca cola vs Microsoft, and some muppets will be singing their names..

Personally, I think all sports teams should be like German football and the top football clubs in Spain. And all these "brand" parasites (often American, but not exclusively), die a very slow and painful death from Ebolu or something.

On December 7, 2009, Bruno was convicted of two counts of mail and wire fraud. He was acquitted of five felonies, and the jury hung on the last count.
His convictions were subsequently overturned on appeal, and as of 2011 prosecutors planned to retry him.

Perhaps when the retrial is over and if he is convicted they will rename the stadium.

I thought we were talking about the stadiums not the teams : /
Teams have been sponsored by various corporate entities for a very long time.
I'm not sure of teams that are solely a corporate endeavour.
I get the point where certain teams are far removed from representing the areas they play.

    In what way?

As of April 2012, however, it does not appear that the stadium's name will be changed after all.

Nope, there were 2 threads. Both were talking about how sports have become brand-based corporate bullshit, devoid of any sporting/ fan institution identity. And devoid of any sporting purpose either.

Its not just about areas. Its about the brand exists to make money. A sports team/ club exists to win stuff and be part of the identity/ pride of its supporters. No-one starts singing "We love you Walmart"..
Atleast there's no muppets that do that yet..

Germany - fan ownership is compulsory by law. Alliance Arena and stuff like that was chosen by the fans. Much better than the old stadium (Ive seen both) and dirt cheap tickets for the fans. Thats what my post was referring to. Perhaps you'd prefer conmen and profiteering scum own European sports teams, instead of the actual sports fans...
