well i don't own a television, and i really have no reason to want to. i watch trains and furrys and animations on you tube and vemio. that's it. i watch democracy now most days, but i do that from their website on the net too.
Fuck the SuperBowl and Fuck Football!!!! i was raised in one of theese msall towns that treat it (especialy High School Football) like its god or something....i think im one of the few from that town that didnt get brainwashed into it.
I find sports to be boring so naturally, I couldn't give a fuck about a bunch of overpaid jockstraps tackling each other over an oddly shaped ball. Why the fuck would anyone pay a bunch of money to just be in the nose bleeds for these games? It might be fun to play but it doesn't deserve that level of attention. Also, a lot of sports fans, especially hardcore jocks are fucking annoying. Why do people care so much about competition? Are people that insecure about their own abilities that they feel the need to prove something to people? and don't give me this shit about we use to compete for procreation in the stone age or whatever the fuck. Newsflash, it isn't the stone age anymore. Time to evolve, people!
Obviously it is something that could be obsolete if we all wanted to but the sad reality is we are not so far evolved as you seem to think. Besides that it is natural though I see it clearly being hammered into american culture more than in most european cultures.
Figures. I don't think most of us are that evolved yet though. However, we should be at this point. Instead, I see this society getting worse and with this macho jock mentality, I don't think we're ever going to evolve. At least, not American society.
Doesn't seems like it indeed. I'm glad I'm in the netherlands in that regard. I'm sure it is avoidable most of the time over there too though
Personally I like watching NFL football and if you don't that's cool, to each his or her own. Don't paint all fans with the same brush though. I don't get these guys who can quote every player's stats and where each of them played in college, and happily spend hours discussing it, though some of them are my friends. Yes I watch football but I don't live for it, it's just one of my varied interests.
Not so, I'm afraid. I'm confronted with it almost everytime I leave the house and especially when I go to school. Be glad you live in the Netherlands and not the inflamed anus of the USA. This is Georgia, where bible thumping, country bumpkin ignorance and ghettofied arrogance collide into one big clusterfuck of manic idiocy. This competitive, jockstrap mentality runs rampant here and any man who does not abide is considered a "fag" or a "bitch nigga." Sorry for this mini-rant but I needed to vent somehow. Should've been born in Amsterdam I guess...
Well, such peeps are not rare in Amsterdam neither. But yeah they don't seem to be the majority most of the time. Except we have (small in comparison) rural country areas too where all the cliché's of a competitive society and also inbred bible thumpers etc. etc. seem unavoidable I guess every country has their fair share of them. I must admit though it probably doesn't bother me so much over here because it is not as bad as there You have my sympathy!
Where exactly do you think human evolution is heading if you don't mind my asking? Because in some ways it alarms me a little that we're not quite as strong a creature as we used to be. What with all this big society being run by governments fighting with weapons malarkey. Or even just how things are becomming more mechanical -- The, machines are taking our jobs malarkey! It's the absence of those things that I find great about sport. Okay you've still got your money making side of things and professional wages are pretty outrageous! Malarkey But fact is that cash is coming in from somewhere. From folk like me who are willing to spend their hard earned bucks on a bit of entertainment. And I'm on a ramble so I'll go a bit deeper. I actually see a lot of beauty in my sport of choice, English football. There's a whole load of planning and preperation goes in to every game. Seeing a well executed play, a team holding possesion or a fittingly labled wonder goal... I say it's up there with great poetry and perfect pop songs. Take this for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3MwhgkASOc"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3MwhgkASOc In both cases I see something rather brilliant about us humans! The second goal is Lionel Messi with quick feet and great determination. The first is Zlatan Ibrahimovich... Now it's against England but don't let that put you off. It really helps my point about sport being beautiful! It's body and mind in perfect quick firing hamony. There's an in-built, or rather well earned!... Display of understanding about the world around us. For Ibrahimovich's goal he processed the flight of the ball, instantly adjusted his body, and found the ability to apply just the right amount of force to loop that ball exactly where he wanted it to go. All in a flash! We still haven't reached the point where we understand how we can do all that in an instant. Therefore those that can do it with such class surely can't be ignored.
I enjoy going to the bars on sundays to watch some games and get drunk. But I can understand why people don't like it. I think football is exciting but that is the only traditional type sport I enjoy.
Yeah the subject is American football I think. What you're talking about is still somewhat applicable I suppose... However, too much fanatical pop culture has built-up in the USA around what amounts to steroid-fueled primitive warfare.... A football culture so fanatical that many would seek to protect university coaches reputations rather than expose rampant sexual abuse of players... just a few things that turn-off some of us less-than-violent hippie types.
That is the whole point of sports - they are a metaphor for war. Our world is less violent than it has ever been, and people need outlets for that part of their psychology. To let out their natural aggression. Better to play football than fight in bars or beat your wife.
