So, I accidentally ordered 2 nose piercing kits, and with the extra, I plan on getting an industrial ear piercing. The industrial earring I ordered is bigger than the needle (which is 18 gauge). Would I be able to still get it in the hole, or do I need to order a larger needle? (I really don't want to wait for that!)

    Thanks for any help!

It depends on your pain threshold, I think.

It would obviously be better to use a larger needle.

But I could squeeze it through? It's not very tapered, but I could probably use a darning needle to open the hole up
and Im fine with a little extra pain

You'd probably be able to force it through. What I would be worried about though is the healing process. The metal stud putting pressure against an open wound can be quite uncomfortable, and might stifle the healing process. Not only that, but it will hurt for a lot longer than if you did it right. May be sore for several weeks instead of a day or 2. Longer heal time will also mean that you will be more susceptible to infection.

Just get the right needle. You can wait a few days.

Quick update: It didn't work. The awkward angle of piercing the top of my own ear didn't make it any easier (every time I would look away, my eyes would be all wonky)
So yeah, I ordered a larger piercing needle and instead of doing the industrial, just put in a small silver hoop on the outside hole I made. And now I have at least 4 new holes in my ear, and only one of which isn't be left to close up. Oh well. It was fun, a little pain and blood is nice every now and then :)

Can't wait for my new needle to come so I can pierce my other ear!!

Also, LetLovinTakeHold- you have a very good point. I didn't really thing about the stainless steel stretching an open wound. It's a good thing it didn't work.

I think next time I try this, I'm going to have somebody help me with it. It's really hard getting things in tiny holes in your ear when you can't get a good view of them...
