i am sure most of you have seen the video that made me make this thread.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLA7dQ-uxR0"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLA7dQ-uxR0 ok so my thoughts were that the girl got what she deserved, but i still think judges have a little bit to much power even if most of them never overstep what is right or wrong. when you can give someone 30 days for yawning when they arent even on trial then something is a little off with the way our courts are run. the part that gets me is that you can be forced to show up in a courtroom and then for whatever reason the judge might find fit would be able to find you in contempt. and that is even if you dont want to be there. as a final note i say again, the girl got what she deserved, nobody should act the way she did. i do think that maybe justice would have been served just as well if he gave her the max on the crime she was there for and he didnt have the ego trip that he was all powerful to anyone who did something he didnt like.
Mmmm she was a bit silly for sure.....but I tend to agree with you in that Judges seem to have a little too much power in some areas.
i had read about it, didn't realize there was a video out though. i don't even know that she deserved what she got. the guy charged her $5,000 for saying goodbye to him after he said goodbye to her, i would have flipped him off too for that shit. yes, she had an attitude, but not enough to justify how he reacted. also, you should not be allowed to sentence drug offenders if you don't even know what a fucking xanax bar is.
What she did was extremely stupid. Judges have a lot of power, and whether it is too much or not, don't act like a fucking idiot in court, and don't diss the judge or he will hand you your ass.
they probably do have too much power, but they definitely have to much power. muching power is one of the main tasks in their job description.
In Some Of Your Posts Lately You Seem Seriously Stressed, Hope Things Get Better Soon...:grouphug: Cheers Glen.
Contempt has been a contentious issue since courts have been around. Flirting with contempt is risky because the judge can issue the punishment as he or she sees fit, do it immediately, and with little or no recourse. As an example, Bobby Seale was in jail for four years for contempt even though he was never convicted of the charges in the Chicago Eight trial. (seven when you don't count Seale whose trial was made separate) http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Contempt+of+Court
that crossed my mind too, but it seemed he was just going to go along with the prosecutor on this until she couldnt tell how much her jewelry was worth. the second time i watched it i realized it was the "adios" that cost her an extra 5 grand. that was kind of the thing i was talking about in the OP. it didnt seem to me that she said it in a negative way, but because he interpreted it that way the bitch got served.
Can you think of another job where a person can send you to jail for 6 months for being rude to them? Of course they have too much power. I think it says something about you when you want the job of deciding peoples fates. Something not very good.
Meanwhile this chick sits for 30 days, and thinks about nothing but that mans white bald head. She develops a deep seated hatred for judges and the whole "just-us" system. And they wonder why nobody trusts them...
Looks like she was in jail for about four days then released after she apologized. http://now.msn.com/penelope-soto-apologizes-to-judge-for-giving-him-the-finger "Contrition can open so many doors. Sometimes even the one to a jail cell. Penelope Soto, the woman who became the Internet's bad girl of the week for giving the finger to Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat during her bail hearing in Miami-Dade circuit court, had her 30-day contempt-of-court sentence lifted after apologizing repeatedly in a second appearance before him. The old softie even waived bond, and all but absolved Soto of her transgression by noting, "I should not even hold you totally responsible. We live in a society where if you listen to music, every other word is a profanity." Soto admitted she had taken Xanax the day of her hearing and will attend a drug-treatment program. And, presumably, keep that finger holstered."
