Last night, I was out at a beach community bar in San Diego, and saw a guy playing pool. His dreads were grown below his knees. It's taken him 13 years.
I meant to ask him if it feels heavy. He had it fully let down. I asked about maybe having close to a record, and he mentioned someone else that he knows of that has them much longer.
I can't say that I'd personally be interested in growing dreadlocks that long, the constant weight must really be noticeable and the washing and drying time... Here are some really long ones: Brian Fair's dreads are around 20 years old now: I'm not sure what the record is for dreadlock length, but I'd assume it's much longer than to the knees or feet. I've seen pictures of people who grow dreadlocks for religious reasons who have to carry their dreadlocks in a sack because they're so long. I seem to remember reading that Guinness no longer has an award for dreadlock length because they found it impossible to distinguish between someone's own hair and real hair extensions that had been dreaded into the hair, which I guess makes sense.
Look up princenoobsauce and lifesagardenyadigit on YouTube for some long dreads. I love VERY long dreads.
I think they look pretty good too. Although, I see more drawbacks in having them, then not having them. I'm glad it's other, and not me.
Those look nice, thick and clean. I'd be worried about your average joe with dreads that long though. Can't imagine his scalp loves him. Also fuck, how do you wash all that hair.
When I see a band where one or more of the members have dreadlocks I always wonder about the washing. I guess it depends on the size of the band but for those that live out of a tour bus, well I think it must be a real challenge to keep the dreads clean and pleasant. When I get too hot, from working out etc, I start to get stressed out and I have to wash my hair pretty soon afterwards. So guys getting soaked in sweat on stage and not always being able to have a good thorough shower afterwards... I'm not sure I could deal with that.
