Monday through Thursday I only eat supper. Friday I only eat lunch. Saturday morning I'll have a light breakfast like a bagel, muffin, etc. Saturday night a nice supper. On Sundays my wife makes a big breakfast and a big dinner with dessert. Sunday is my eating day. I found that eating once a day during the week makes life so much simpler. For one thing it saves money, for another it cuts down on dishes and trips to the bathroom. I don't get upset stomach or bowel issues. It helps maintain my weight. It also greatly simplifies decision making. There is no need to second guess about whether I really want to eat something or regret that I had. There are no 'what should I have for lunch?' dilemmas. I see my co-workers belaboring this and then spending $ 40 - $ 50/ week on lunch. I generally spend $ 6 - $ 8 on Fridays so that's $ 30 - $ 40 a week they spend that I get to k eep. Not to mention one of them has to get in their car to go get lunch. Since I am eating once a day I don't want to waste my eating on junk, so no fast food, no cookies, Doritos, pretzels, etc. I completely avoid fast food and junk food and treat sugar as the enemy. The only time I eat anything made with sugar is Sunday dessert. I avoid corn syrup plus all the artificial sweeteners, preservatives, etc. the only bread I eat is on weekends and if I do, it is freshly baked from a bakery, no store bought bread from a bag. I gave up drinking all soda awhile ago. Diet soda is evil. By the time supper comes around I am genuinely hungry. I eat as much as I want at supper and try to have a piece of fruit afterwards. On Friday I buy lunch, something like a sub sandwich or a burrito. On Friday evening I get the kids whatever they want for dinner; McDonalds, Wendys, pizza, etc. it is the one time a week they can relax and eat what they want. My wife eats lightly on Friday evening as she weighs in at weight watchers Saturday morning. I just skip Friday supper, not a big deal. Since I don't eat at work I drink a lot of water, at least a liter a day. i take a whole food multi-vitamin each morning. since the vitamin is made from whole foods, not synthesized it can be taken on an empty stomach. I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning and 2 beers when I get home from work, which is such a nice way to wind down and relax from the day at work. anyone else eat once a day? (aside from Buddhist monks).
Im a one meal a day person too. I can't even stand the thought of breakfast, lunch is touch and go but usually just ends up being my 4th or 5th coffee of the day, then I'll usually eat a meal around 5/6pm. I still cook for everyone else in the house though.
Interesting indeed, I am short of being a stick figure and I eat 4 meals a day, rarely drink alcahol, or eat sweets...but I run, swim and gym virtually daily so I couldn't survive on your diet.
I don't think skipping meals is a good thing, because your body needs food to function properly and maintain long-term health. Personally, I think it's better to eat several SMALL meals throughout the day. Gaining weight shouldn't be an issue if you're eating healthy food. The thing with skipping meals is that it can result in over-eating when you DO eat, and when you don't eat your metabolism slows. So when you do eat your body will be more likely to store calories consumed as fat. But everyone's body works differently. I engage in intermittent fasting on a regular basis, which isn't quite the same thing as eating only one meal a day, which I would not advise, but if it works for you then.... I am trying to build muscle mass, so eating only once per day is out of the question for me. For a while I was down to like 1,500 calories a day, whereas now it's like 2,500-3,000.
It is a good thing you are not diabetic. It is important that you make sure you fill your bodies nutritional needs or it can cause problems in the future. When I took a nutrition class i discovered that although I am obese I was not getting proper nutrition. I lacked vitamin A, D and water in my diet. Now that I have improved my nutrition I have lost weight. What I did learn when I took nutrition is that most people over look their nutritional needs. My daughter is a once a day eater and she has dark rings around her eyes and is not looking well. I found out she lives on Ramen since she has been in college.
My ex boyfriend gained around 20 lbs from eating just one meal a day. It makes your metabolism slow down to keep from burning too many calories during the day. Plus you're digesting all your daily calories at night when your metabolism is already slower.
yeah, that's generally considered to not be healthy. plus it just doesn't feel good. spend most of the day hungry, and the rest of the day stuffed.
I do this constantly..eat only once a day. I've yet to decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing or neither... I don't get very hungry at all and food sort of grosses me out. People spend so much time eating.. don't monks eat only once a day?
yes but they eat early in the day which gives them energy for the day and also allows them to sleep easier at night because they aren't digesting any food. Whereas the OP is doing the opposite so he runs on empty all day and his body is busy digesting food while he sleeps.
Those of you who mention eating several small meals in a day reminded me of a book I read called "A Week In The Zone" by Barry Sears. His book focuses on maintaining a hormonal balance by adjusting your eating habits. His book has really great suggestions for how to prevent adult onset diabetes. If I remember correctly he suggests 5 small meals in the day. Which consists of two healthy snacks and 3 meals. It is a pretty good book. I recommend it to any of you who have the patience to read that sort of book.
I eat more than once a day. I'm actually trying to make sure I eat breakfast, because I am trying to lose weight, and I usually just have coffee.
I do not and never have really done breakfast. Coffee is usually it. I tend to try to eat a meal each day that is balanced and when I can handle food I eat good nutritious snacks. I still can not do volume so I tend to make sure what I am putting in is healthy.
I eat when I feel like it. Sometimes once a day, sometimes 4 times a day, sometimes ill fast for 3 days. I couldn't imagine keeping a routine schedule like that. I like surprises
Is food really all that more expensive there than it is in the U.S.? Here in the U.S., it costs one dollar to eat an unhealthy burger but four dollars to eat a healthy salad. Is it the same where you are?
i like surprises and eat when i feel like it too, but my stomach starts rumbling on a pretty regular schedule, so i tend to feel like eating on the same pretty regular schedule.
frequent eating taxes the body's insulin levels. Constantly straining your endocrine system has negative consequences. Also, the idea of eating 5 (or even 3) balanced nutritious meals a day is pretty unrealistic for those with busy work and family schedules. When someone is accustomed to eating during the day it is easy to fall into bad habits; you didn't have time to make lunch in the morning and you get to work and someone brought in donuts or brownies and bam, there you are eating junk. Or you get home from work just in time to get the kids to swimming practice or piano lessons and by the time you drop them off you feel very hungry and lack the energy to go home and cook so before you know it you're in the Taco Bell drive thru. It is simply not realistic to think that most people can plan out that many meals to provide healthy balanced eating. Furthermore many can attest that eating breakfast makes one more hungry. Skip breakfast and you don't even think about food until 1pm. Eat a bowl of oatmeal or a yogurt and at 10 am you're ravenously hungry. The idea that we need to eat constantly is a recent trend. In America, for most of us food is not scarce, it is super abundant. We have to constantly think about whether we really need food. By restricting one self to eating once a day all the bad habits and decisions are kept at bay. This lifestyle works for me but probably not for most people.
