Did I not already create a thread in relation to this? The majority of those who create new accounts and introduce themselves never stick around. It seems to be an ongoing situation from since before I joined and will be an ongoing situation as long as this forum remains. I may be one of the latest individuals to have joined the site and actually stuck around as a regular poster.

I am fairly new, I joined in January, but I only join forums when in ill health. Once I recuperate I tend to have a real social life that takes over. Since I still have a major surgery coming up it looks like I will be around for a while but once I start going to college next Fall I won't have time to linger here.

That is great you're going back to school at 49. I am almost 32 and I need to go back but I feel too old, so when it read stuff like this it's encouraging to me.

You are never to old to learn. When I was going to school last year I met an 80 year old student. I decided to finish my education once my children were near college age because I can no longer physically handle being a Chef and Baker. I have a communications degree but now I am going for computer science.

i would think that you would be the most likely to know if you did.

i do vaguely recall such a thread existing, so i suspect you might be on to something.

she was pretty hot. so are a lot of people that mysteriously disappear after a short posting burst. or years of posting for that matter. and probably also a lot of those people that never post outside of their own intro thread, but we never know what the hell those people look like.

there really are all ages in college these days. i can't say that i've seen the 80 year old student referenced above, but it seems like most classes i've taken had at least a couple 40 or 50 somethings.

unfortunately, most of them are either gigantic suck-ups, or gigantic know-it-alls. so try not to be that guy.

Indeed, but it tends to be the community college where you find them. Not so much the four year universities.

most of the oldies are there because welfare or disability or unemployment office is paying to get them retrained and get them off the working taxpayers teat

this is just my own observations in my own college...so if anyone thinks this is directed at them maybe they should be ashamed a bit

That is not true, BBAD. Older people attend community college because they do not have to pay a dime. Once a certain age, one does not have to worry about paying anything for an education. Sad, is it not?

i was speaking from personal experience, and i've only been to four year universities.

there may be more of them in CC, but there are plenty of older folks in universities too.

I chose to go to college in order to encourage my own children to go. It is not true that older people do not have to pay a dime. I have to pay for college just like anyone else. I am disabled and do not have to work or attend school. It is my choice. No one is making me go. I could sit on my rear the rest of my life if I wanted. I can't live that way. Before I got hit by a car I juggled jobs, did yoga, and took dance classes Until I reached 30. Then I was a stay at home mom who lived off the grid, farmed, gardened, home schooled my children, wove blankets and scarves. I made toys, mass produced jewelry, and art for money. I get $7000 Scholarships but only because I keep my GPA at a 3.95 average. I work hard for a ill near 50 year old lady who nearly died last fall. So for those of you who put oldies like me down for going to school, let me see you do better. Get off your rears, quit complaining about know it alls, obsessing over your own selfish pleasures and do your best with your lives! I am so sick of selfish children who have nothing better to do than to put other people down to feel better about yourselves!

I don't attend community college. But it sounds like a myth to me that the oldies who go to community college don't have to pay. So show me proof!

since i'm the only one here who mentioned know-it-alls, i feel like this is at least partially directed at me.

for the record, i never put down oldies for going to school. i was basically encouraging a mid-oldie to do so himself. i mentioned the know-it-alls as being an annoying trend among the oldies, since constantly interrupting class to either announce that the professor is wrong or to announce that the professor is right because they've already been there and experienced the same thing, is an annoying disruption to the learning environment. that doesn't mean i'm putting you down for going to school.

Yeah well it struck a nerve I'minmyunderwear. I don't think I have disrupted any classes the way you describe others as doing at your school. I am just upset with my school for discharging me this month for taking sick leave and it has put me in a fowl mood where school is concerned. Plus they expect me to pay $2000 because the advisor forgot to drop my classes at the beginning of the term even though she told me she would. So now I am looking for another school for autumn.

I am retired and have never been offered or told about tuition waivers. I don't live in any of the states mentioned. It does not sound like they get a quality education for free. You know what, those old retired people earned it after years of paying taxes and working most of their lives. So I see nothing bad about it.

i'm sorry to hear about that. i have noticed that college advisers/administrators/office personnel/etc tend to be not so helpful (and, too often, even counterproductive).

obviously not all older students exhibit the traits i had mentioned, it's just a trend i've noticed. in my experience, it occurs in maybe around 50% of older students and 2% of just-out-of-high-school-students, so by no means does being older mean you'll be like that, it's just a lot more likely than if you're 18.

and of course, the same goes for my first paragraph in this post. the office workers have a greater tendency to not get shit done than most customer service people i've dealt with, but that does not mean that no college office workers do their jobs.
