I want to start listening to the blues, but have no idea where to start. Can anyone recommend anything? It would be awesome if you could give me specific albums and stuff like that. I get overwhelmed when I have never heard of an artist and they have produced so much stuff that I just don't know where to begin. Thanks!
I'm listening to Gary Moore's "Have Some Moore - Best Of" right now. It's a really good collection, you could check it out.
The Red Devils - King King and ofcourse you will need to get the big names, Muddy Waters,Blind Willy McTell,Willy Dixon and BB King but i would suggest getting a few compilations first to see which kind of blues you like best.
Jesus, Spiral Sea. I thought i was the only person in the world who had heard of The Red Devils, never mind owned their album. King King is awesome, one of the finest albums ever made, it's such a pity Lester is no longer with us. Great suggestion SS. Any Son House. The Robert Johnson Set Allman Brothers - Live At Fillmore East Jimi Hendrix - Blues Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour
Check out best of Robert Cray for a younger guy, otherwise look out for BB King, Bobby Bland, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed, Lowell Fulsom.
I usually can´t specify the styles of music, bands are playing, but I guess that this is Blues (even if it´s not, it´s soooo good!): Jonny Lang (e.g. "Lie To Me") Kenny Wayne Shepherd (Band) (e.g. "Live On")
Blues span a really wide range, and can sound very different, so here are a few artists from different generations. (Not nearly complete or comprehensive) Early: Robert Johnson (a must) Son House Blind Lemon Jefferson Lonnie Johnson Mississippi Jon Hurt Mi Fred McDowell Leadbelly Mid: John Lee Hooker Muddy Waters BB King Bo Diddley Albert Collins Albert King Buddy Guy Modern: Johnny Winter Eddie Lang Hendrix (Get "Catfish Blues" its great) Stevie Ray Vaughn John Mayall Clapton
Clapton has a 2 disc CD set called "the blues", it's really amazing, and he has a new one called "Me and Mr. Johnson" that's all Robert Johnson covers, it's really pretty good. Robert Johnson is a must, and also Check out Odetta and Bessie Smith. Billie Holiday of course, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, if for nothing else than his version of "the sky is crying" which is just amazing.
Start with the early 20th century Delta Blues, then move toward the electric blues pioneered by MUddy Waters, then on to the Modern blues. I'd recommend Robert Johnson Willie Dixon Muddy Waters Blind Lemon Jefferson Howlin Wolf Clapton Hendrix Allman Brothers VERY early Fleetwood Mac
