What does the school do with the children?

Gatto states the following assertions in “Dumbing Us Down”:
It makes the children confused. It presents an incoherent ensemble of information that the child needs to memorize to stay in school. Apart from the tests and trials that programming is similar to the television, it fills almost all the “free” time of children. One sees and hears something, only to forget it again.
It teaches them to accept their class affiliation.
    It makes them indifferent.
    It makes them emotionally dependent.
    It makes them intellectually dependent.
It teaches them a kind of self-confidence that requires constant confirmation by experts (provisional self-esteem).
It makes it clear to them that they cannot hide, because they are always supervised What does the school do with the children? Gatto states the following assertions in “Dumbing Us Down”

School makes us loose our compassion.
It's a perfect system of manipulation.
The video is very interesting and well-made!
    Goodbye dreams, goodbye childhood.
My future shall not be mathematically determined.
Thanks a lot for sharing this, you heard of FOX before? It's got the power of all famous TV channels in order to damage our minds.

    Be the difference, rebel!

Seeing as how this guy is from my hometown area, I can confidently tell you that this is a bunch of simplistic bull.

    In my opinion.

Odon will be here soon to defend schooling and show us, with links to government sanctioned websites, why we all need it.

It's funny, because I somehow knew before I even clicked on this thread that it would be about John Taylor Gatto. I've read a couple of his books, in fact. Some good information, but it's all been very obvious to me for a long, long time.

Public schooling is designed to basically break down a person's individuality from a young age, to create consensus and basically a population that doesn't think for themselves. This suits the controllers just fine, because they want a dumbed down population that is content to be simply cogs in the system, working, paying taxes, and accumulating material items which ultimately mean nothing once you leave this earth.

I mean, look... in elementary school you are given gold stars for doing well on tests by simply regurgitating what someone else told you is true. Doesn't mean it is, but the message gets across anyhow.

    Conform or be cast out.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu9Ycq64Gy4"]Subdivisions - Rush - YouTube

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
    In geometric order
    An insulated border
    In between the bright lights
    And the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
    Opinions all provided
    The future pre-decided
    Detached and subdivided
    In the mass production zone

Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone

    Subdivisions --
    In the high school halls
    In the shopping malls
    Conform or be cast out
    Subdivisions --
    In the basement bars
    In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth
    The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
    The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
    The timeless old attraction
    Cruising for the action
    Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
    Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
    To relax their restless flight

Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...

Honestly I loved grade school and I love college and I am super happy that I went and am currently going. Don't really care what anyone else thinks about it, I love it.

Perhaps that explains why I never went further than an Associates degree. A lot of good that did. [IMG]

Math is the reason i dropped out of college. It was a ball and chain in every degree i was interested in.

Well, you're in a rewarding field, dealing with plants and being outdoors. Plus you're intelligent as hell. I wasn't trying to pigeonhole or stereotype everyone who is college educated. Please don't take offense, sweetie.

yeah, it was fucking ridiculous. i mean, i had just finished taking calculus in high school, then i went to college, and they required me to drop back down to basic trigonometry for my one required math credit.

if i could have just tested out, it would have been no big deal. but something like 1/3 of the grade was based on pop quizzes, so i actually had to show up to class just for those.

I'm not offended... just giving a different perspective :D

I'll admit that I don't use my calculus during my life but I am a total nerd so I thought it was fun. I don't really remember much now though since it was 11 years ago.

I had dinner with a family and one of their friends, when i was in college. They are both very hard workers who are successful. Both husbands are doctors. One is a breast cancer surgeon, the other is a plastic surgeon.

I was having a hard time with math and i asked them if they have used any of the math in your doctor career that they studied in college. They both said no.

I was already frustrated as hell cause i was in tutoring everyday for an hour, as was several other students i saw daily. Now i didn't know the other students personally, but you can tell their was an agreeance we were all stuck at a point in our degrees because of math. We cannont graduate unless we going through this.

This is bullshit because it hard! Im not going to apply for NASA! No i aint gonna land a rover on mars! I want to be outside studdying the fish in the river!

No you can't be outside studdying the fish cause you gotta do this money stealing wall-bearing math class.

So you take calculus 101, 102, and 103 you know or whatever the numbers are.

Then you gotta take trigonometry 201, 278, and 298

    Then you gotta take

Man what the fuck all i wanna do is work with the trout!
