Argentine Jorge Bergoglio has been elected pope, the first ever from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.

And, of course, nothing is going to progress as far as the Church is concerned:

"He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage. In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God." He has also insisted that adoption by homosexuals is a form of discrimination against children."

Ironic, considering the cover up of sex crimes within the Church, simply moving the priests from one parish to another with no logical thought to outright remove the priests from the Church.

Bound to happen. I wish I could get a glimpse of the secret stuff they do to elect the next pope. Wonder if God picks the next pope :)

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Does anyone really believe that the abhorrences permitted under a variety of popes will suddenly come to an end? That sexual abuse of children will be swept away, as opposed to being swept under the carpet? That the untold billions of wealth locked up in pointless icons held in the Vatican vaults will suddenly be disbursed to the poor? That gay people will be recognised and welcomed? That contraception will be not only approved but encouraged? That women will be granted full and equal rights including potential papacy?

If a pope did one-just one- of those things I'd STFU about hierachical religions forever. But it won't ever happen, especially with a 76yo conservative Jesuit as the boss man.

they could have made no better financial choice because Latino's/Hispanics are the largest group of catholics and the catholic church needs to keep b*tts in the pews and money flowing in, so elect a South American and you can guarantee it to happen.

The new Pope, Francisco I, side by side with Videla, Argentinian Dictator. From a kid of the Hitler Youth, to an ally of the Argentinian Dictatorship.
