How many of you take multivitamins, and which ones do you take? I find it's hard to find a really good multivitamin -- let alone one that is affordable -- because the overwhelming majority (especially the ones you buy are the grocery store) are next to worthless, because they contain such small amounts of vital nutrients like vitamins D and E. They also contain all sorts of nasty additives and binders that do not easily break down and assimilate. I recently started taking Dr. Mercola's 'Whole Food Multivitamin Plus Vital Minerals', which are very good vitamins but also very expensive. A bottle of 240 tablets is nearly $50 and lasts only a month, because one serving is eight tablets (four tablets in the morning and at night), but I find it's worth it because it supplies adequate amounts of all the important vitamins and minerals. One serving of these vitamins supplies 5,000IU of vitamin D, as opposed to the usually 400IU or less in most store-bought vitamins. I am trying to find a more affordable vitamin that is almost as good, but am not having much luck.
I take NOW brand's Special Two-it's a major health food brand, real good quality-not that cheap, but I think it's worth it. I'm a firm believer in nutritional therapy
I buy mine at Vitacost. They're cheaper than anywhere else I've seen and they have a subscribe & save sort of program. I buy all of our vitamins there. I still take the Rainbow Prenatals, because I still have some left from when I was pregnant. You could also buy Vitamin D on its own. I get a liquid kind from the store brand there. Sophia and I both take it.
Yeah, I am familiar with this brand. I will look into those. Vitacost is a pretty good source for vitamins. I get a lot of my vitamins from Swanson, which has some pretty good deals, too.
I have never bought any. I think it's ok to run low on some vitamins/minerals but I've been looking for a vitamin D supplement as well since I am sure that would not be an unneccesary luxury at the moment. I did not make a choice though.
They sell these at the Vitamin Shoppe. I just saw them a few days ago. I didn't look at the label, though. So after you mentioned them just now, I Googled them, only to find they come with a cancer warning. They also contain soy, which, to me, is a big no no.
some chewable children's multivitamin. i don't know anything about it; my mom buys me a year's worth every christmas so i figure i might as well eat them.
Someone doesn't know the difference between prescription drugs and vitamins/supplements. I eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and get plenty of sunshine during the time of year I am able to. I take supplements to optimize my health.
i take multiply diverse things to eat so as to not need them. my most resent primary care phisician prescribed a pharmacutical multi-vitamin, which was fine as long as the va gave them to me for free, but when they started charging pharmacutical prices for them, i put an end to that. all of which was recent enough that they're still good. although the pull date is a couple of days from now. i've still got tons of the damd things. never took over the counter ones, and don't expect nor intend to start doing so.
I totally agree with this, I worked in pharmacy for years and most vitamin brands are next to useless, so are most multi vitamins. The biggest crap you can take is Centrum. These days I just don't bother taking anything. I am considering going back onto probiotics - although obviously those aren't vitamins.
i will admit that i take vitamin c...sporadic high doses just because it supposedly helps prevent kidney stones...and i avoid citrus because my tongue doesnt like acidic food so i figure im probably low on it
How does one know if vitamin pills are actually improving one's health? The benefit might be little to nothing or they might actually be doing some damage if a person was already in good health generally before taking them. Some effects can be measured fairly easily. With mineral supplements a person can sometimes see the effect in blood tests. For example, if someone is deficient in magnesium, taking magnesium supplements can bring the magnesium measured in blood tests back to normal levels. What about vitamins? This is not to dismiss the entire vitamin industry. Just raising questions. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/13/do-vitamins-and-supplements-actually-work_n_1510985.html
