There music was created in the perfect time, when that was forbidden, scary and unnatural, their lyrics were godly. P.S Rest in Peace DIO
The most eerie and doom-filled Sabbath song ever... What is this that stands before me? Figure in black which points at me...turn around quick and start to run, find out I'm the chosen one...oooooohhh nooooooo!
Doomy, eerie, hippie, happy, they were quite diverse too: Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved? Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you? Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school? When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool? Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope - do you think he's a fool? Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light and I've changed my ways And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of our days Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say If they knew you believe in God above? They should realize before they criticize that God is the only way to love Is your mind so small that you have to fall In with the pack wherever they run Will you still sneer when death is near And say they may as well worship the sun? I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe? You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.
Early sabbath...over-stated and cartoonish, not without ( sophomoric) entertainment value, devil-rock along the lines of kiss with less make-up. Something for pre-pubesents to grow out of... Later sabbath...why? Ozzie gave us Randy Rhodes... and took him from us RIP Randy
Randy Rhodes has nothing to do with Black Sabbath. Go whore with him somewhere else. And to compare them with Kiss in the sense of 'devil-rock' is nothing less than pure blasphemy! Even if their tunes seem overstated and cartoonish to you their early riffs and songs are ten times more thrilling, inspiring and legendary than anything else in hard rock/heavy metal, let alone Ozzy's solo work. If it was just something for pre-pubescents to grow out of it would not have inspired whole other subgenres of music and stil be thanked for that by 'prepubescents' today.
Aside from the praise for Randy Rhodes, such a comment cannot be condoned. Such ignorance and idiocy has never befouled these boards in fuck knows how long. How could you say something so stupid? Be it old Sabbath or later Sabbath, it's still better than anything else out there. That is all.
Oh don't get too upset laddies, I thought Sabbath sounded cartoonish even when I was 12, that was 1972...There was just so much other music at that time that sounded way cooler... Sorry about the KISS crack...I'll admit it's not a fair comparison musically, it's just the demonic theme has always struck me as crass promotional gimmick. I actually have an appreciation for that old stuff now, it's never lost that cartoon quality. It's like watching old Three Stooges, The drums, the riffs, and of course Ozzie never fails to crack me up. :guitarist::rofl:
It seems some people are stuck in the past after all if he can't look past promotional gimmicks of 40 years ago when it was proven by their following studio albums, live concerts and influence on other music that Sabbath is much more than a band with a cartoonish devil image. It's his problem I reckon. Perhaps the promotional gimmick has turned him off from actually checking the music out beyond the Black Sabbath title song and Paranoid. I don't know, just speculating where his cluelessness comes from.
I don't like to be mean to people on the forum but I am still having a hard time getting past the Kiss comment. Most metal bands strived to be like Sabbath, they were so taboo back in the day. I cannot even imagine them turning out drivel like Detroit Rock City or even worse.....Lets put the X in Sex. I guess some people are just inexperienced to the Sabbath sound, I guess dumber things have been said. Most people who don't get it only know the song Paranoid or Crazy Train, I won't hold it against them. I must add that I had almost vomited when I saw a commercial for a Honda Pilot and the happy family in the vehicle was singing Crazy Train. Geez.
While waiting breathlessly for Sabbath's new album "13", here's MY 2 cents: Tony's the forefather of METAL, of course! Tony better than Jimi, well, no margin of comparison in the first place because the genres are so apart one from the other. Ozzy the best singer for Sabbath? Well, didn't anyone know a certain Dio was around too after him? Bill Ward the best drummer ever? Don't think so....Ginger Baker is!! As for Ward not being in Sabbath anymore (it looks like Rage Against the Machine's drummer is playing on "13"), he would've done better to look less at the $$$ side of the Sabbath reunion and more to the fans and the quality of their latest album, "Tony and the band kicked Ward out..." MY ASS!!!! IN ANY CASE, WARD OR NO WARD, TONY AND SABBATH BLOODY RULE!!!!! [Pix courtesy of Mikesline]
To be fair, Sabbath released some real shitty albums too. But that was not in the early period. Dio is a better singer but Sabbath's music with Ozzy is spectacular and I say partly because of Ozzy. I am already sure their new album will suck by my standards. I'm not looking forward to it at all, I might just ignore it. Not dissing but it would highly suprise me if they did something equally great as their old albums with Ozzy. And to me Bill Ward is as important to the sound of Sabbath as Iommi. It's the combination of the four that made Sabbath what it is so in this topic I don't really care how great Ginger Baker is
My 'cluelessness' is derived from formal guitar training from age 8, actually living during that era as well as spending the majority of it listening to and playing heavy music, on stage and in bars starting from age 14. BOC Rush deep purple Stones Zztop Nugent Journey UFO Aerosmith Zep Hendrix, ect.. Sabbath may not be the only culprit in the grandfathering of what I call 'Bone-head metal', but it's spawn has been the scourge of rock ever since. :seeya:
Well to be clear, I don't see them as the absolute forefathers of metal neither. I think the forming of the metal genre was already happening at the time and although Sabbath definately helped shape it they're not the first or only band responsible for it's birth. But if you let your view of Sabbath's music be influenced by later bone head metal bands that you seem to dislike that's your choice but it does not make you sound smarter or more insightful any way. It sounds like you hold them responsible for later music that ruined your precious rock music, boohoo... While in fact no music is ruined by other music that may mock or make a disgrace of what you dig in a certain sound. You just ignore the lousy (subjective by the way) stuff :2thumbsup:
The Jimi vs. Tony discussion is retarded. Tony could never have done what he did without the advancements and innovations Jimi made first.
Popular music develops along certain lines, even locally, so wouldn't expect you to understand Asmo, but bone-head metal actually did ruin progressive 'metal' in my area... It was about 1980 when the first big heavy metal bar opened in Denver and the big thing was scorpions, judas priest and the like... to me the blues was all but wrung out of rock by then, and became not art but an angry and violent reflection of the youth consciousness and fucked world we live in. When headbangin came in I threw in the towel and still praise the day I did...at least I have my hearing lol I don't blame sabbath, they were innocent as a bunch of british lads could be, their music was raw and true...good enough?
Well I understand but I am not into progressive metal myself so I don't really care What I still don't understand is your criticism on the actual band Black Sabbath in your first posts in this thread. Their sound, riffs and lyrics are beyond any gimmick so it would be a bit ridicilous if it was indeed that gimmick or the bands that came later that ruined Sabbath for you. But in the end it remains your loss.
