Classical guitar players can out shred any rock/metal/blues guitarist.Jimi was better than Stevie Vai(this dude plays with too many effects). The best guitar players are the least known. Sometimes being the "Best" doesn't mean everybodys gonna dig your style.I'd rather hear some simple blues licks over anything to be honest.Screw all that Stevie Vai,Malmsteen shit.I wanna be entertained! Not bored to death by a 2 hour long guitar solo. Thats why I like Hendrix so much,he did it all!!Great playing, song writing, stage presence/show etc...He just left us to fast...Who knows what else he would of done.
Jimi kinda of started the whole effects things. So, if you're gonna be against effects or something...Jimi aint what you're looking for. Nothing is wrong with effects anyway.
Dude, youre an idiot, number one jimmi is a piece of shit compared to vai, thats right a piece of shit. Secondly saying that steve vai playes with to many effects...YOU FUKING IDIOT SO DOES HENDRIX! As said before he practicaly invented effects. So you dont like lsitening to shred, you still have to realise that it takes alot more skill and practice to play shred licks then those shit pentatonic solos. Plus vai can sight read music like a mother fucker, he can paly any style. Not saying i like his music gah its disgusting, but he is still a better palyer by far then hendix by far.
What is with the comparisons of hendrix to guitarists from years later? Trey's ass was still being wiped by mommy when hendrix was blowing away everybody. Some of you people act like Hendrix wouldn't have gotten any better had he lived. Gimme a break, Vai wasn't making the music he does now in the late sixties. I saw beck and clapton mentioned, AFAIK they were blown away by hendrix, like everybody else. Every other "greatest" guitarist mentioned came years later.
Although Jerry is my favorite guitarist besides Hendrix, he is not the best technical player. His ability to speak to everybody's soul through his guitar outshadows his technical shortcomings.
hendrix is the man, no matter wat, he tore it up wen he was alive, plus he died young just think if he still was here, he would def. surprise everyone and release the best any1 has ever heard, (LYMY Hendrix.)
Can go on for hours about who is the greatest, as it is pretty much opinion but steve vai bothers me for some reason. Jimi is up there on my list though.
I don't believe in the idea of a virtuoso. Sid Vicious once said "You just pick up a chord, go twang, and you've got music." Who cares how many notes you can pick a minute? Who cares if you can play the solo to Stairway To Heaven as beautiful as it sounds? Who cares how many chords you know, how great you are at scales, whether you can tap, do hammer ons an offs, and play like Eddie Van Halen? In the end its what sid vicious said. Whether you can burst into a beautiful solo instantly in the end easy or difficult, it can still sound beautiful, because god knows the amazing riff that still plays in peoples heads today from Smoke On The Water was ANYTHING but difficult. That riff was so simple yet so amazing. You don't have to play like Yngwie Malmsteen to be in a band, and a good example is Kurt Cobain (as overrated as he may be). Kurt's riffs were so simple and so easy but he was able to fool around with distortion and all sorts of things to create his own sound. Jimi was great, but not the greatest, there is no greatest. Just be grateful you have a guitar to make music in the first place.
i might have to agree and say he wasn't the best. he definetly was ahead of his time though with his music, and experimented with things on guitars that most people haven't heard of. that's why he's so appreciated today as one of the greatest. but as for his playing goes, he does have a good unique style, but i could think of many more guitarists that are better than he is.
Reading this thread made me laugh. Both sides of this argument sound completely retarded. Jimi hendrix is about a decade older than SRV, maybe more. Jimi did use a lot of pedals, he didn't create them, and he wasn't the only guy using them. One that I can remember was the "Fuzz Face" pedal. Not that using pedals makes you any better or worse of a guitarist. The idea that this argument is about jimi being the greatest guitarist, and then when people bring in other guitarists that are technically better players the argument shifts to include timeframes and the like. No, Jimi isn't the greatest guitarist ever. He's good, and all, but for someone to be the greatest of all guitar players, they'd have to have a fucking handle on all styles of music. I didn't hear jimi pull out any bluegrass, jazz, classical, reggae, ect. Was he the best rock guitarist? Fans of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and various other bands would disagree. It's all subjective, and thats why these threads accomplish nothing.
this question has no answer.its like is chocolate better than strawberry ice cream? its why there are so many different music styles, one size doesnt fit all.i love hendrix but i also love clapton, page, beck, blackmore and the list goes on.you might not like his sound or style but the other part of hendrix was he and clapton and page influenced so many kids to play guitar.and these modern age players are great but ask them who got them into music in the 1st place?hendrix is a legand so are others,so stop comparing, open your ears, and enjoy whats being played
Indeed, it's an opinion based on your personal taste and it doesn't matter at all who is the best just because of that. It's good enough to know he was playing awesome stuff :cheers2:
theres no possible way to measure the skill of a guitarist. as Nikki Sixx ( yes he's a bassist get on with your life ) once said " I could easily play like all the other bassist's but thats not my style" Jimi played his style he played the way he wanted. Fuck maybe if he never picked up a guitar then we'd have someone else. besides, i can easily argue Kurt Cobain is the best guitarist ever or that Slash is or Kerry King. i think we should put this shit to rest. if you like Jimi then thats your opinion. iunno let's resurrect him and see how he would play in todays music scene.
Jimmy may not be the best guitar played in the world, but his style of playing, his usige of amps were revolutionary in his time. He played with his heart and did it all for music itself. And for the fans ofcourse .
