What do people think makes them a hippy? Some of the things people usually associate with being a hippy is trying to be eco-friendly, vegetarianism, yoga, tai-chi, living in a commune etc etc etc etc but what do people themselves think makes them a hippy, that is if they consider themselves to be one.
i dont think you should be doing something to fit into a certain stereotype... but if being peaceful and be connected to nature and respectful towards the environment makes you a hippy, so be it. i feel sort of claustrophobic if i say i'm this or that.
well i was ordained by Vince, like the rest of us . . . hey how did you get in here!!!!!!!!!!! shennanagins, shennanagins . . .. get the brooms .. . . . . ***enter in sounds of approaching sirens in the backround***
In response to ZePpeLinA: I know what you mean, you don't want to be pidgeon-holed. I can respect that for example I try to live my life according to Buddhist principles but normally decline from calling myself a Buddhist. As for being a hippy I wouldn't class myself as one. I'm just interested as to what people think makes them a hippy if indeed they consider themselves one.
I don't make a huge effort to try and be a hippie, but I get refered to as a hippie very often, so I suppose there must be a few reasons why. I fit into the stereotype in that: I dress in tie-dyes and generally brightly coloured, unconventional clothing. I love acid rock and most forms of music generally associated with hippies. I'm a vegetarian. I have long hair. I attend demonstrations. I play (or try to play) many different instruments. I write poetry. I enjoy being close to nature. I occassionaly smoke pot. I like to meditate. I sometimes go barefoot when the weather's nice enough. Well, that's really all I can think of at the minute. Hmm, no wonder everyone's always calling me a hippie.
I do not consider myself as a hippie. I often get labeled as one though..and that's fine w/ me..i choose not to limit myself......................................... but...i also do not conform to the NORMAL hippie standards...therefore I AM RUTH...i also dislike alot of people who claim to be 'hippies'
i never said to anyone that i am a true hippie, but i like to live with the hippie mindset. i don't own any tie dye, i'm not a vegetarian... but i am a very peaceful and open minded guy, i like to be an individualist, i dig alot of music, and smoke pot. even though the last two are stereotypical "hippie" things, i mean, it's also what i do, and sometimes i get labeled a hippie for that. go figure.
I dont dislike those who 'claim to be hippies'. I never understood that resentment towards someone saying who they are or at least are striving to be like. I mean do we not all do this by default? Sidhatta Gotama (the most recent of buddhas) he himself followed other dhammas in his lifetime before he created his own. In his time it would be normal for the bhikku (or monk) to ask "What dhamma do you follow?". So sure! When you 'see the buddha kill the buddha!' never follow a stereotype, but also dont be negatively affected by them either because they do exist (well in the trivial aspects of life, which is most of it). We use words dont we? Are we not labelling all things and sacrficing their 'divine' essence by stripping their core with our simplistic terms? Sure we are! for the sake of communication. By jove! I am a hippy, I'm an introspective, meditational, compassionate, tantric, peaceful, environmentally aware person. -------Phew! I just spent all day reading Buddha by Karen Armstrong, hence my 'passionate' shpeal----- Even that has a cause! Peace
theres a lot of things that i guess would make me a hippie, but i usually get called a 'dirty hippie' by my stepmum for having incense in my room, listening to 60s stereotypical hippie music, and yesterday i bought a didgeridoo, which didnt help matters in the least
its an energy from the inside, put aside the physical apperence etc. its not a specific look on life...it can be many things. but in the description peace, love, kindness and resect for others, yourself and mother nature will definatly show up... lovetracy
when i say i dislike some who claim to be hippie..i mean a specific person in particular....i mean those people who claim to be this than and the other..and ARE actually far from that..those are the people i dislike... i do not have to like everyone...although i am polite to all.... I do not believe alot of the normal 'hippie' belifs....so that's why i claim to just be here now and be me..
I don't really know what makes one a hippie. What makes others think one is a hippie is your clothing, appearance, beliefs, etc. etc. But, when others call me a hippie I just say, 'No, I'm just embracing the hippie spirit inside me.' And, to me, the "hippie spirit" is the stereotypical "peace & love, man" but it doesn't make me a stereotypical hippie - I'm still Rachel. I hope that made sense.
It's the same things that make me who I am... my dad was at a party and kept saying "We wroteeeeeeeeee to each otherrrrrrrrrrr alllllllllll of those timesssssss... we never thought we'ddddddddd end uppppp with a bundleeee of hippy joyyyyyyy" Of course, my slurs may be off a tad... yes, there was quite a bit of ingestion of wine at the party, and my mom bought five or so cases of beer... and we never drink much wine so we're giving it away and trying to get rid of it as there is hardly room for it all... well, there is, it's just kind of uncomfortable having it all over in the basement and half full/half empty bottles in the fridge... of course, half is only a metaphor for opened or if you wish to take it politically correct, previously uncorked...
there is a new law out that says you cannot be a hippie unless you smoke pot, wear bell bottoms tye dye and hemp, own a VW bus with at least 5 trippy stickers on it, smell like patchouli, and have dreadies with beads in them. sorry, I don't make the rules, I'm just here to enforce them. (please be kind....I'm an idiot)
I personally believe that hippies were a product of the 60s and only people who lived than can understand the true meaning of hippie. Life most people who frequent this site I often have the label hippie imposed on me (not that this offends me). Probably because of how i dress, how i think, and my music, etc.... Although I may have silimar tastes/ views as hippie I dont consider myself one simply because of the time I live in... Peace and Love, Jon
What makes me a hippie? I believe Frank Zappa said it best: What's there to live for? Who needs the peace corps? Think I'll just DROP OUT I'll go to Frisco Buy a wig and sleep On Owsley's floor Walked past the wig store Danced at the Fillmore I'm completely stoned I'm hippy and I'm trippy I'm a gypsy on my own I'll stay a week get the crabs And take a bus back home I'm really just a phony But forgive me 'Cause I'm stoned Every town must have a place Where phony hippies meet Psychedelic dungeons Popping up every street GO TO SAN FRANCISCO How I love ya, How I love ya How I love ya, How I love ya Frisco! How I love ya, How I love ya How I love ya, How I love ya Oh, my hair is getting good in the back! Every town must have a place Where phony hippies meet Psychedelic dungeons Popping up on every street GO TO SAN FRANCISCO... Hotcha! First I'll buy some beads And then perhaps a leather band To go around my head Some feathers and bells And a book of Indian lore I will ask the Chamber Of Commerce How to get to Haight Street And smoke an awful lot of dope I will wander around barefoot I will have a psychedelic gleam in my eye at all times And I will love everyone I will love the police as they kick the shit out of me on the street I will sleep... I will, I will go to a house That's, that's what I will do I will go to a house Where there's a rock roll band 'Cause the groups all live together And I will join a rock roll band I will be their road manager And I will stay there with them And I will get the crabs But I won't care
I wouldn't call myself a hippie. Why would I want to be a hip pie? No thanks, I'd rather not be a piece of pie. Even if it was a hip one. I don't even like pie.
