I finally have a home that is mine. Now I'm planning on doing something to set up my backyard so I can hang out naked and not offend the neighbors. Which means a fence or barrier of some kind. Anyone have any ideas on that?

No, that takes away the sense of being naked.

There is no standard answer as all backyards are different. First spend sometime there on a sunny day and ascertain which would be the best place to relax nude. Then look around and see what you can see from there and where you can be seen from. This will tell you what sort of shielding if any you may need.

Having decided on the spot try sunbathing with your swimsuit on and see if you anyone appears to be watching you. If not then slip your costume off. Remember that the majority of neighbours simply don't care if they happen to glimpse you in the buff unless you are doing something improper. Even ask the neighbours if they mind which they probably won't; they may well go nude themselves. You do need to be concerned about being seen from the road outside and there may be high ground nearby where shielding is all but impossible.

It is only "close" neighbours that you really need to be concerned about and forget those who need binoculars to see any detail. They could be prosecuted for voyeurism. We all go to nude beaches and know that we are likely to be seen by non-nudists, that goes with the territory as it sometimes can do with garden naturism.

It's not so much offending others as us being worried when often no offence is actually caused. They can always look the other way unless you are really very much in their face. If they choose to stare out of a window or over a fence for any length of time that is their problem not yours.

If you want to garden nude or wander around in the buff then you need to be more thick skinned and just not worry until someone actually objects. You are very unlikely to be prosecuted if you show due consideration when challenged.

Finally any fence you put up may make your space shaded and that would be self defeating.

You already have some great advise (and some bad advise)..
but I will add some advise too, (decide for yourself which kind of advise):

If you can afford a complete perimeter privacy fence, that's one thing...
But maybe you only need to block certain areas from view.

Sometimes trees, shrubs and bamboo do a better job than a fence at providing privacy. Some neighbors have windows so high that one of these living fences is the only way to block view.

If you have neighbors who are cool with nudity, a fence may not be needed.

As someone said, I hope you don't lose your sunshine in order to gain privacy.

Can you tell us a little more about your yard?

.26 acres, odd shaped, on the side of a gently sloping hill. Surrounded by elderly and retired people.

For a garden that is quite large. You still don't say if any parts of it are secluded or not directly overlooked. The bonus is that Elderly and Retired People are often more easy going than younger couples; a high proportion of naturists are the wrong side of 50 for many reasons so you could well find that some of your neighbours are naturists too. Planting is probably the best long term solution.

Try to raise the matter with your immediate neighbours or simply go for it and see what happens.

Fair point it depends on your point of view. In context I was inferring aged 50+ though active seniors take the opposite view. Having been of many naturist beaches in Europe the majority on many beaches are older couples. May be as we get older we just do more as we please.

How about a 12'x12' or so Garden Shed 8' high with a deck on top with a railing that is constructed in such a way to give privacy? Are the adjacent houses 2 story?

This would be a Quick Solution, if all you want to do is tan nude, rather than spend $$$$ making your yard look like Fort Knox !

About 3 years ago, I bought a house on an acre of land, and the first thing I did was build an 8 foot tall cedar fence around my entire property. I live on a corner, so I only have a neighbor to my left and of course across my house and so on. If you have the money, I suggest building something like that around your place. It's nice and sturdy and it gives you excellent privacy. I like to go out to my backyard in the middle of the day completely nude, mostly because I can. It really is nice when you have complete privacy.

My back yard has some privacy with trees shrubs and buildings, but there are still a few holes. I put up some cloths lines with sheets and fleeces hanging on them, and that gives a little more privacy.
My yard now is private enough that anyone would have to be looking to see me naked, but if anyone has seen my they haven't said anything.

I used to have a naughtier across the street who was a part time nudist with not much privacy in her yard. She would come over and visit me in my yard often, but she moved away a year and a have ago.

how does someone measure .26 acres?

    with a measuring tape?

might as well just measure it in feet

A 0.26 acre square plot of land is roughly 54 feet by 54 feet.

One acre equals 43,560 square feet, so I just took the square root of that to get the length of one side and multiplied by 0.26 since this is not a full acre.

This is not a square plot of ground anyway, but I was trying to get some kind of idea of the size in feet. Ain't big no matter how you look at it.
A tape measure would measure one side pretty fast.
