imperial stouts are probably rated high because of the high alcohol content.. get a few into you and you'll be raving about them. historically that's what they needed to keep from freezing on the long cold journey across the baltic sea. i like any beer that's made well and is appropriate to its' style. i am mad about hops though. i keep hop vodka in the freezer (cheap vodka infused with hops via a coffee percolator) in the freezer if i ever feel the beer i'm drinking needs a boost in hops, and alcohol for that matter. though if the beer is good enough but not high in the hops department (weizen, scottish ale, english brown, doppelbock, etc), i won't mess with it.
There are some very good imperial stouts. It's just that many of them are way too boozy, and few breweries really pull the style off well. North Coast's Old Rasputin -- a Russian imperial stout -- is one of them. Founder's Breakfast Stout -- an American imperial stout -- is another. I used to be big into high alcohol "big" beers, but that was mostly for the alcohol. These days I prefer something balanced and kind of mellow, like a lot of the English brown ales, pales, bitters, etc. Those are satisfying as hell to drink, and you can drink them in a fairly large quantity without feeling like shit later. Now that that warm weather is here, I tend to look toward the more quaffable, lower ABV styles. If anyone wants a nice hot weather beer, look into the kolsch style (a German style of lager with a very sparkling, effervescent quality) -- one of my favorites.
Eww...speaking of stouts that have too much alcohol in it (and taste like it)... back when I still drank beer I got a case (on sale, super cheap...gee wonder why) of this.. http://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...2011-american-homebrew-contest-146647685.html it was the sam adams longshot home brewing contest and there were 4 brews in them. -all stouts or porters-dark beers w high alcohol contents. ONE of them was okay. the other three, esp. the two w the most alcohol in them (9 or 10%) on first sip i was like "okay, this isn't bad"... then i drank one and then two of them. then i thought they were soo terrible that i actually couldn't even finish the case. they were soo disgusting, imo. I was so mad feeling like I got stuck w that case. if i was gonna drink a darker beer i'd just take a guiness, thank you very much.
Guinness Extra Stout and Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. Those are sooo good. (The later is one of my all-time favorite beers.) But NEVER buy the Guinness Draught in the cans. Nasty, nasty stuff.
Or of course just off the tap. I used to love going to restaurants and having 2 or 3 guinness drafts w some good food. Yum Yum.
summer definitely calls for lighter beers.. wouldn't catch me sipping an imperial stout or a barley wine in august. my favourite summertime beer is a crisp pilsner, no higher than 5%, and St. Ambroise apricot wheat beer, probably the only good fruit beer i've tried
This Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout is easily one of my favorite beers in the entire world. I love this stuff. It blows Young's Double Chocolate Stout out of the friggin' water. It's almost as good as pussy. OK, not quite, but close.
not sure where you would find it, but its a nice one. i'd describe it as a unchallenging black beer for people that think they don't like dark beer. i almost commented on that last night... that IS a good one. if you can find this one, give it a try. it's cheaper than Samuels, not quite as good in my op, but it's hard to beat even a middle of the road stout in my book. i'm all about finding the best beer for the least cash these days, as i'm unemployed
I just finished making Dandelion wine (is fermenting in the basement) and am excited to make Pumpkin wine - it ferments IN the pumpkin!! How cool! :daisy: ~ FlowerMama
wow i haven't heard of that in years ! ^^^ my mom told me her grandmother used to make that. is it good?
You got that from Trader Joe's, correct? I've had a few of the other Boatswain beers and found them to be lousy.
ya. their ipa's are kinda crap but that one and this HLV is pretty drinkable, especially 2 glasses for $1.99 funny how that chick in that thread thought you and i were same person lol. well, similar taste in brewskis anyhow...
I only came in this thread to torture myself with the thought of alcohol. I can't drink right now cuz it wouldn't be good for jr. Man I so want something sweet and alcoholic enough to make me pass out. Here in six months I'm gonna have a beer night. Any good suggestions so I can consider it for the next forever.
