Last month it was big stores who took heat for asking employees to work on Thanksgiving. Now McDonald's is playing the "bah humbug" card by requesting that its franchisees open their doors on Christmas Day. But it is a secure bet that those owners will be home with their families on the 25th of December. Evidently nobody cares anymore though. On Thanksgiving, the franchisees were expected to stay open. Jim Johannesen is the chief operations officer in the U.S. for the company, according to Advertising Age, and he said: "Starting with Thanksgiving, ensure your restaurants are open throughout the holidays." The individual shops decided what to do, and many closed doors on Thanksgiving. The company has also asked that shops stay open for Christmas. Shops decide on their own However, the ultimate decision still rests with the owner/operators of individual stores in the franchise, said McDonald's spokeswoman Heather Oldani. Competition getting fierce In July, new CEO Don Thompson took over the fast food chain. Last year, McDonald’s did better than any other fast food chain in the country despite the bad economy. Sales started slipping this year though in October. However, they rebounded in November. "Our November results was driven, in part, by our Thanksgiving Day performance," Johannesen wrote in a December 12 memo. Advertising Age reported that only 6,000 more stores stayed open for Thanksgiving this year, but Oldani reports 12,000 more McDonald’s stayed open for the holiday. Desperate to make more money The Chicago Tribune pointed out that owners are not happy about the request. It is just a needy act angering owners, according to previous owner Richard Adams. Workers should always take off Thanksgiving and Christmas to be with families, according to the first operations manual written by business founder Ray Kroc. Adam points out that the idea goes against core company values. Tough competition makes all the main difference, I guess. Sources Chicago Tribune Daily Finance News 10
Heaven forbid! (pun intended) I like working on other peoples superstition days. For some reason, the law says you get time and a half. The only reason this atheist thanks god.
^^^I don't know...Christmas....Christmas....trying to think... because I have been driving around hungry looking for restaurants, fast food and 6 pack places many holidays and Christmas.... I'm thinking the only thing I am CERTAIN I can remember being open is Chinese food. The Chinese are always open....they aint losin money but yea... I mean, I don't know... lots of places make people work holidays. My husband works 6 days a week and is SUPPOSED to have off 5 paid holidays a year but in actuality he has off about 2 holidays and gets paid 2.5 time for the other 3. that's just how the economy is now days... if someone doesn't like it....they can hire someone else. Oh and I don't every single person would work xmas. They'd prolly have some ppl on xmas eve, some xmas, some Nye, some new years, etc... divide them up...
I don't think this is a big deal. I've worked on Christmas before. It sucks, but it isn't really a shocker that some companies are open 365 days a year. Look at the medical field - they certainly never get holidays off.
When you work holidays you tend to just...celebrate when you're not working. Holidays are too....crazy (for me anyway) w 5 million family members all w diff schedules n shit anyways... all I like to do for xmas is... have my son open his gifts xmas morning and get to the beach for a night or two sometime around that week.
Hospitals, airports, prisons...these are also open on Christmas. Not everyone celebrates holidays. Christmas is just a day, if you have to work, you arrange to see your family at a different time. My family gets together on Boxing Day. If you don't like working at McDonalds forever, then stay in school, kids.
Welcome to 2013. This is the 21st Century. Most people don't have families in the sense that they did back in 1954. We are rapidly approaching that slave era shown in movies like Metropolis and in books like 1984.
very true I'm a hotel worker and have no complaints about working x-mas. because I consider myself lucky to have a job..that's life
I live in a tiny apartment and am not much of a cook. Years ago if my parents visited on Christmas we would go to a truck stop about 10 minutes from here. They had the best food ever. I would rather starve than to go to McD's.
McDonalds will do anything that will make them the most money. As long as people are willing to fork over money for their crappy food they will be open to serve it. I just don't know anyone that actually likes to eat there.
not a big deal IMO, you do get paid and usually theres enough people wanting or needing to work that if you don't wanna work that day its all good
Pile on the atheist. :toetap05: What I enjoyed the most about living in Brooklyn is that there always were Chinese and Indian eateries open on Christmas. As well as Muslim grocery stores! I hate Xmas with a passion!
