Hi. My father is bald but most every guy on my mother's side of the family hardly ever went bald, and if they did, it wasn't until they were in their fifties or sixties. I was wondering because this is something that does bother me and I was just wondering what my chances might be of escaping this. Do any of you know anything besides a positive mindset that I could use to help my chances of escaping this hair loss...at least until I am sixty? Any shampoos, herbs, diet ideas? I would appreciate some advice and info. Ben.
Baldness is a trait that is carried on the mother's genes. Your father being bald does not effect you. Is your maternal grandfather bald? That would be the best way to tell. They have Rogain to stop hairloss, but other than that I don't know what to tell you. Be careful when looking for products--there are alot of hair-growth scams out there. Oh, and if you ever do become bald, PLEASE don't get a comeover! -Kate
LOL. Thats correct, if you go bald it is all your mom's side. My hairline started receeding at a pretty young age so I know Iwas screwed. I have more scalp than my grandfather on my old man's side. My mom's dad...oh man did i know i was screwed. The good thing is that I always had hair that had a mind of its own anyway so since I shave the dome now I look a lot better. So going bald was the best thing that ever happened to me. ***time for a rant**** I HATE THOSE FUCKING HAIR LOSS COMMERCIALS. THEY ALL SHOULD GO LIKE THIS: ARE YOU GOING BALD? DO YOU FEEL AS IF YOUR PENIS WAS HALF THE SIZE OF EVERYONE ELSE'S BECAUSE OF IT? NO? WELL WE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE THAT BY SHOWING YOU A WOMAN WITH HUGH TITS. WOW, LOOK AT HER IGNORE THIS BALD GUY. OH! BUT LOOK! NOW THAT HE HAS HAD OUR PATENTED HAIR REPLACEMENT SYSTEM HE SUDDENLY HAS A CORVETTE AND NOW HE GETS MORE ASS THAN A TOILET SEAT. HAVE ANY SELF ESTEEM LEFT? IF SO THEN SEND FOR OUR FREE VIDEO THAT WILL SHOW YOU JUST HOW MUCH OF A LOSER YOU REALLY ARE! God I hate that shit. ***end of rant***
Yes I think those commercials are really stupid and I have tons of hair. I think they needed to invent bigger penis or bigger breast cream and weed out the plastic surgeons.
Whoever says to look at your mother's father to determine if you'll go bald or not is absolutely nuts. The trait might come down that way, but my grandfather died with a thicker head of hair than I ever had. My other grandfather has all his hair, too. My dad's bald, though. And my hair's definitely thinner on top than it used to be, so I'm sure I'll be joining ol' pops here before too long.
How 'bout the great grandparents? The gene absolutely comes from the mothers side, I remember that much from school. However I am far from an expert. Anybody out there know more about genetics?
Yep, it's on your mom's side. Ethnicity also has a lot to do with it. Native Americans rarely go bald.
Sweet. Thanks guys! My grandfather on my mother's side (as well as most of the other guys) only began to go bald in their sixties, or later years of life. I really appreciate the clarification. Later, Ben.
Hate to say this but it actually comes from both sides of the family . 50 50 chance you will go bald.
LMao. Ok, the predomninant gene for male pattern baldness does come from your mom's side, but there are lots of factors, and there is no way to tell if you are gonna go bald or not. The chances are about 50.50. A better way to deal with it is to realize that you are powerless to do anything about preventing it, and that character and achievement is something you DO have control over. I have always had a long thick mane of hair, and at 45 I thought I was beyond any worried of baldness. But lo and behold in the last year or so my hair has begun thinning a little bit on the top, and receeding a little bit. I have had to accept that I will most likely experience some hair loss. Over the last 10 years the thickness and even the length of my hair has suffered from aging. That is just the way it is. It is all up to fate and predisposition genetically. But it is not what happens to you but how you react to it that determines your reality. Baldness is something that requires a man to be a man, accept it, make the best of it, and rely on who and what you are inside. It sucks that society projects its bullshit on superficial appearance, but humans are that way. If it is a real big deal to you (as it is to most of us guys) start saving your money for a hair transplant when you get older...or prepare to accept that you cannot stop the aging process. It happens to everyone eventually. true beauty is within. Peace and good luck, Viv-
Anyone who has ever taken a college level biology class knows that it actually does come from the mom's side. If we are taking about pattern baldness, that is. If you haven't had a college level bio class then you wouldn't know that.
Yeah, the gene is on the X chromosome. Since men are XY, you could only get your X chromosome from your mother. The Y chromosome ALWAYS comes from your father, and it doesn't really do anything, theres like, 6 functional genes on it. Everything that makes you a man is on the X chromosome, oddly enough. When you have two X's, the "man making genes" get canceled out and a female develops; but the Y is too small to cancel anything out, so the single X chromosome is allowed to express it's genes, like the one for testosterone levels, which plays a big part in balding (higher testosterone levels means more balding).
Hey you 2 scrotums i got that info off the tv and Healthy option magizine go get angy at them. That was from a new hair study on baldness, they sed it comes from both sides so blah go talk to them. SCROTUMS .sorry for calling you both that. haha
Sorry, but pattern baldness definately comes from the mom's side. There are some types of baldness that do come from dad's side, but not the typical pattern baldness. Maybe that's what they meant and they weren't clear...I hate that!
