Upside down flag = Nation In Distress. All my flags have flown upside down for years. The richest nation on the earth, responsible for leeching the majority of resources and much of the waste needs to generate all the good karma it can... this is a great chance to help. Of course, large muslim community ion each country and they are also not white people...not to enticing to republican right wingers. -v
green thumb, what do you mean its not a matter of opinion its fact? yes amerca does have more than most, but not everyones filthy rich, people shouldnt have to feel obligated to donate if they dont want to, not donating doesnt mean your a bad person.
Trust me people, it's $35 million we're giving in immediate aid, you don't think that number won't probalby be $100 million by the time its over.
I just donated $100.00 to UNICEF. THAT is a bigger proportion of MY net worth than $35 Million is of the US's net worth. If I can afford this percentage chunk (and probably more later) then my country can do more, too. How much are all those who are complaining that the US is "already doing enough" donating of their own hard earned cash????
That was very generous of you, and you've make a good point. Just as a reminder, the initial $35 million from the U.S. is only the first step. An aircraft carrier and other military equipment as been stationed in the area to help with the rescue and recovery efforts. Undoubtably there will be perhaps Billions more donated by the U.S. in the coming months and years.
jeez. i'm pretty annoyed with the stingy comment, too. after all, this is just the beginning, but there's no pleasing those who just wanna complain about how awful we are. that's fine, who cares? like some poor orphan's gonna bitch when he gets some food. i've gotta wait until the 1st to send money, pay day. how amazing that something this horribly tragic, and somehow we assholes manage to change the discussion to bitching about some already-paid-for inaugural party. do you know how much it costs to cancel contracts for service on a party that big? people gotta work, no matter how bad shit is in SE asia.
Actually, every American who pays taxes is donating of their "own hard-earned cash" since it's tax dollars going over there. Of course, 35 million is only about 15 cents per taxpayer, and when you look at the sort of money the US government likes to throw around it really isn't much. What I would really like to see is not just more money, what we should really be sending are doctors, engineers, water purification equipment, emergency shelters, food, medicine, building materials and anything else that will help protect the survivors and rebuild their societies. I think those things would help a lot more than just sending money.
well, they are being sent. it's a given. through the military programs, charitable programs, and all that. my cousin has already been deployed, along with other medics in his unit.
Sending actual SUPPLIES, all the way from the west actually costs MORE than buying the supplies in the East. India has ALL the supplies needed, they just need to be brought to the area. (And India is donating quite a bit, too.) It costs MORE to bring a bottle of water overseas, than to buy the water itself, that goes for everything else. Doctors and other personal need to be TRANSPORTED, fed, clothed and have equipment and shelter, which requires MONEY. Food and medicine is available from India and other near contries, but MONEY is needed to buy, ship and pay any taxes and duties on it. I can do better than that. I don't trust the Bush administration to follow through with ANYTHING they promise. Did you know that of the MILLIONS of dollars that was PROMISED, by the USA Bush government, to the war torn and genocide ridden areas of Africa, not a SINGLE CENT has been given???? Not a penny has arrived. I trust UNICEF more than my own government. They will get what needs to go there NOW. And I know the people willl get it, not wait years for it to never arrive, like Africa has been doing. I mean no one has to donate or help if they don't want to. But I want to. Bear and I are not going out to dinner tonight, as we planned, we are just having a home cooked meal, the savings of which will pay for at least half of our donation. One meal, and we won't buy champange tonight, just some cheap sparkling wine. It doesn't take much "sacrifice" to help people who have a LOT less than we do. I will be donating more next week, when we make more cut back decisions. Maybe beans and rice for dinner two nights instead of meat. That could allow us at least $40.00 more. It doesn't take much. I also found out an aquantance of ours from India's family is all OK. We were worried, he said they got a lot of water, but there were no deaths. (not in India completely, just in his hometown.)

Just an undate... http://apnews.myway.com/article/20041231/D87AQ4FO0.html The U.S. has currently committed $350 million towards relief. I don't believe this will be the final talley. Also some has blame the U.S. for being directly responsible for the tsumani. They were able to link Globale Warming and U.S. Automobile exhaust resulting in this disaster. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,11813903^7583,00.html Blame us for whatever is wrong in the world, but give nature some credit for this one.
And the Japanese just offered up half a million-who will be the "Big Man" It's great though. It's nice to see poeple seeking status by how much they give again.
