I really recommend one that is foreign, you'll need one that uses openvpn, and you'll want AES256. There are a lot of good ones, but I like ipredator which is from the guys who run the Pirate Bay.

Here's some info on configuring openvpn.
    http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/howto.html

There are problems with a VPN, one is that you can't be sure they don't log your traffic and two, that while AES is cyptographically secure, the keys used to implement it may not be, which decreases entropy and makes them susceptible to attack.

Another option is a mix net. Tor is a program developed by the navy for communicating securely, and it passes your encrypted information through a lot of intermediaries before it leaves, leaving no sure way to identify the sender.

    https://www.torproject.org/

There are weakness in tor also, it's anonymity software, and not security software, and you shouldn't do things like check your vanilla email address through it, because the last tor node will be able to see your traffic.

A proposed solution online is often to use both, which can be effective, but in most cases if not well implemented will make things worse. Using the VPN will destroy the anonymity tor provides, and the exit node will see you log into your vpn.

A good solution would be getting one of those prepaid visas, buying a foreign vpn, and toring into it, but must be done very carefully. There's also the problem of spyware, which can be defeated, but if not considered...

Then there's option C which is far more secure and involves a botnet and the neighbors wifi. Use the neighbors wifi to ssh into a series of bots...

Anyway, a VPN or TOR can be considered reasonably sufficient against government metadata analysis. This is different from an investigation, which both of those forms of security would fail.

Those all sound like enhanced security measures but not bullet proof -right?

What are the chances of preventing the US govt from targeted spying, if they were so inclined?

Nothing can really be considered bulletproof if you're dealing with targeted spying by a nation state, which has virtually infinite resources.

If such a circumstance couldn't be avoided, the botnet would be your safest bet, and it would look more like from neighbors wifi, sshi into botnets and then send your data through covert channels, such as sending an encrypted email inside of an HTTP packet.

Scapy is good for this. http://www.secdev.org/projects/scapy/

If one had to leak sensitive information, you could be advised to send it to several news agencies from a public computer far away from where you live. I would also advise moving to somewhere you wouldn't be a target of an investigation after that.

You can do that too, but I would still apply caution knowing what means exist that could be put to misuse. Recognize as fact we're dealing with government who not only makes the laws but also has the power to (re-)interpret them as well.

As I said, an informed and organized movement would be necessary for anything to actually happen.

Yup, they had to be told that it was happening. Anyone in control of their own brain and with the inclination to look into such things would have known this has been going on for quite awhile. By the time you find about something of this nature from the media it is way too late, they have moved on to another more devious plot. There is no hope, only rebellion...

And let's not forget how corporate cash pays the salaries of 99 percent of "the media."

Of course our corporate task masters won't tell us this. Their message is "you must conform, resistance is futile, buy our products to ease your pain."

"so hold me now--in your long arms
so hold me now in your long arms--your automatic arms-your electronic arms
in your petro chemical arms-in your military arms----------
    and when love is gone
    there's always justice
    and when justice is gone
    there's always FORCE
and when FORCE is gone--there's always mom------hi mom

    well , you don't know me,but I KNOW YOU
    and I have a message
to give to you--------here comes the planes
    neither snow nor rain
    will stay these couriers
    from their appointed rounds"-------

Some lyrics --not in order- from Laurie Anderson's --OH Superman, which still is relevant.

I just heard on Press TV that Russia has returned to using old typwritters because of the USA spying.

And my friend that lives in Brazil (and does something or other for the Brazilian government) telephoned me last night and told me that in Brazil the government is considering disconnecting from the Internet and creating just a Brazil-Net.

Oh and no my friend didn't ring me up just to tell me that.

I'll continue to send photos to family and friends, and if NSA wants to spend time looking for hidden messages contained in them, they're welcome to. Just exercise appropriate caution when you wish to keep communication private.

Russia is a nation state and knew of our intelligence gathering before this, we've been spying on them for 80 years. They're going back to using typewriters to prevent a similar data leak to this.

And to the conspiracy theorists, we knew that there was spying before this, and we knew there were abuses in Iraqi prisons before Abu Ghraib, What these whistleblower things do is create a story that can be told in an easily digestible format. Pictures of Abu Ghraib, and a powerpoint of the surveillance programs.

And again, why does the government keep freaking powerpoints of it's clandestine programs?

If it's because of the USA or to prevent similar in Russia the situation is that fall has started.
There's over 6 billion people on earth and we can't keep putting people out of work at an expotential rate. We can't keep triggering wars to prop up dying economies. And we certainly can't keep social engineering generation after generation to be bigger and better exhibitionist consumers.

Who cares if it happened before this?

You wouldn't happen to be trying to defend Obama, would you?

Are you insinuating we should just let Obama do wtvr he wants cause its been done before?
