Interesting talk on how gmo food can cause a serotonin depletion and its connection to mental state.

I'd say she's talking 75% speculation at least. Some truth but exaggerated.

I found this in the youtube suggestions while watching:

Do they still say "land of the free" anymore?

The original study that linked serotonin depletion to depression has been found to be incorrect. The Pharma companies and many outsiders still use that as true though.

There is no way to measure this effect and for 49% (approx) of patients in clinical studys of SSRI/SNRI meds had no improvement. (many of the approved drugs in this class only show an improvement margin of just over 50% and that's enough to be put on the market in the US.)

There are many similar professional, peer review papers out there, I just grabbed this of the net at random... TLDR the whole thing.

Depletion of serotonin levels has been linked to a lot of things lately though, hence why anti-depressants are so widely used these days. One of the major problems is people want to blame it on a lot of things like GMO, but also fail to look at their lifestyles. I'm not saying GMOs are good or bad, I'm just saying there are a lot of causes so more options should be considered when you want to blame something for causing it.

Listen to NPR (Radio Times, WHYY) discussion with Gary Greenburg (Psychotherapist) and his new book The Book of Woe. Good discussion about new DSM-V and puts together an argument that there is no evidence of mental disorders and relation to chemical imbalances. Audio is posted on WHYY Radio website. http://www.amazon.com/The-Book-Woe-Unmaking-Psychiatry/dp/0399158537

Also check out NPR Science Friday discussion about DSM-V with NIMH Director, APA President. Discuss many things including why DSM-V should and should not be used as guideline for mental disorders, future of psychiatry, track record of mood disorder meds, etc. Great discussion. http://www.npr.org/2013/05/31/187534467/bad-diagnosis-for-new-psychiatry-bible

(I've suffered from mixed mania since 15 (now 49) and have been on all sorts of meds plus ECT and have had very, very little relief. Now on SSDI.)

This video has me thinking twice about buying any imported USA foods containing milk. Britain and Canada do not allow farming cows with bovine growth hormone but there's no regulation stopping the import of products containing BGH milk. It's also interesting that while BGH is legal, raw milk is illegal in most states. Is there a connection? Clearly BGH milk in raw form is unfit for human consumption, refer to the pictures of blood and puss...

I agree, people do need to be more aware of the dangers of GMO. I was thinking of buying an anti-GMO tee shirt of two, and maybe a pin-back button. I welcome the opportunity when people ask, "What are frankenfoods?" or "What's GMO?", to explain and educate people, one person at a time. Believe it or not, there are still many people who have NO idea what any of that is, they happily purchase packaged foods for their babies full of GMOs and think they are giving their kids a good, healthy diet!
I know Zazzle has a ton of anti-GMO shirts, buttons, mugs, all that stuff, I even saw a baby bib and a pacifier (wish my kids were still babies for that one!), I'm going to check it out more thoroughly. I did a search there for "anti-gmo" and also "frankenfoods" and found a huge selection. We need to educate the world, one person at a time.

Here is something that might surprise many people. It is no big secret that serotonin depletion is not the cause of depression and that raising serotonin levels is not the cure. They actually teach this in psychology classes. Well documented mainstream research has demonstrated that experimentally depleting serotonin levels in an ordinary healthy person does not induce depression, and immediately raising serotonin levels in depressed people does not alleviate depression.

This does not mean that the use of serotonin re-uptake inhibitors is completely bogus however. For people with a particular allele of the serotonin producing genes depletion of serotonin does induce depression and increasing their levels of serotonin for prolonged periods does reduce their symptoms. However this does clearly show that serotonin depletion is at least one step away from the true biological root of the problem.

Doctors are prob quick to prescribe the meds, cos it can be very distressing seeing someone very depressed or anxious. Or it could just be my nativity. I actually don't know much about GMO food so have a willingness to find out.

Though my instinct & experience is telling me that changing your attitude and actions towards life is much more effective in combatting depression or anxiety than SSRI's pills. Though that said the pills can partly be useful.

I don't know much about GMO food, but I do have this crazy feeling that doctors have a quota to fill when prescribing these SSRIs, not to say they are not helpful in certain cases, but my doc wanted to prescribe them because I was tired! A friend of mine was prescribed them for migraines! makes ya wonder...
