The Lone Ranger Movie Blurb by Shale July 4, 2013 I suspected this movie was going to be silly and today I confirmed it. If you liked Wild Wild West then this is your movie. I think this was supposed to be a reboot of an old Western for some generations that did not grow up with it. Ppl my age remember hearing it on the radio before it became one of our kid-targeting Westerns on TV from 1949 to '57. It had its good moments and Johnny Depp as Tonto pretty much carried the movie with Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger more like a co-star. The story actually starts in San Francisco in 1933 (the year The Lone Ranger first aired on radio) when a kid dressed like the Ranger encounters an old Indian at a carnival. The Indian tells the story of The Lone Ranger and our movie is told in these flashbacks. Not that they hit it off at all. John Reid (Armie Hammer) is returning to his home in the West in 1869 having studied law and believing that justice must be meted out in a courtroom. This naïveté gets rather annoying as the movie progresses and everyone else is seeking justice at the end of a six-shooter. John's brother Dan (James Badge Dale) is a Texas Ranger and bringing the most vicious killer, Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) to town to be hanged. Tonto happened to be held in the prisoner car as well for unspecified reasons. Action starts about here when Butch's men are trying to spring him and John almost recaptures this vicious killer (but won't shoot him) so as they say about good guys ... Tonto & John Imprisoned by Prisoner But, there is a lot more action to come and the two disparate men are thrown together when John is deputized by his brother with their father's old Ranger badge and they ride out in a posse looking for Butch. After an ambush, Tonto finds John dead. But, John revives and has this rapport with a white Spirit Horse that shows up. Tonto Talks to Spirit Horse John and Tonto then ride together, one knowing how to deal with evil ppl like Butch Cavendish and the other with some unreal ideas of bringing him to trial for justice. Tonto & Kemosabe Ride Together There are subplots about John being secretly in love with his brother Dan's wife Rebecca (Ruth Wilson) and the sleazy railroad tycoon Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson) who also has eyes for Rebecca and getting rich on a secret silver lode. Helena Bonham Carter plays Red, a bawdy house madam with a finely sculpted prosthetic leg that all the guys are crazy about. She too has a grudge against Butch Cavendish. Red's Artificial Leg This movie ambles for two-and-a-half hours and probably could have been tightened up a bit. It had its entertaining moments but with all the killing going on, both point blank shooting by baddies to Gatling gun battles with Indians it is still basically a comedic and often absurd movie. During the final very action packed battles, Rossini's "William Tell Overture" started blasting as in the old TV series. Oh, and there is actually one "Hiyo Silver" shouted by The Lone Ranger.
Just the costumes are enough to scare me away. Here is a story about the REAL Lone Ranger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFabfnfhIaY"]Jay Thomas on Letterman.2009.12.23 - The 'Lone Ranger' Story - YouTube
Consider this a 'spoiler' but this first episode of the TV series is basically the same story as the new movie, including the traitor Collins and all the rangers except 1 being killed in the ambush and the fact that Tonto's family was killed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLJuc7hl3I8"]The Lone Ranger Season 1 Episode 1 Enter The Lone Ranger Part 1 - YouTube
i went to see the Lone Ranger today. i liked it. it's funny, deliberately campy. the theater was pretty crowded and everyone was laughing. it certainly didn't deserve the panning it got from the critics.
