Your going to get old. Can you stand to do physical work the rest of your life? Be prepared for a time when your arthritis is so bad building a pool is out of the question. This is problem with manual labor jobs,. they will toss you aside and get a new college kid. If you have a electrical certificate it may help. You can be the boss then.

You also have to consider the opportunities that are there without an education. :)

It comes down to risk. Taking a BA,BSc without supporting that with a further degree is a waste of money. Your statement though has to take into account that in our parents time a BA or a BSc was considered an education, today it is not.

Student loans can be a burden but also if you have the grades you can apply for grants and bursaries and they do make a difference. Also reality makes a huge difference in if you stay at home and do your education the cost is manageable.

Let's say I make $10 an hour with no degree and no debt.

I make $20 with one, but have debt. In the end I have the same amount of money. If I can pay off the debt in a reasonable amount of time it's worth it. I will one day make "more" money. But if I am working for 30-40 years just to break even it's not worth it.

But you are right education is important. Go to Europe, tuition costs you a few hundred euro and they throw in a bus pass for the price. But that's socialism and we can't have that can we lol. Silly republicans.

You could as they are very closely related. Advertising is essentially a part of Marketing..it's just one slice of the pie. It's making your product or service known to the public/marketplace. Many people with art degree's actually move on to become advertisers (the creative side). Business degree's can help with the business side of advertising. Many people w/ different degree's like English/history/public relations, etc..actually end up being quite valuable in the media/advertising/marketing fields.

This is why i've been thinking about pursing a degree that's not specifically advertising or marketing. Tho I guess it comes down to how the program is at your school

how much does school cost for you guys down there? here is about $500 per course on average... give or take, of course there are some really cheap courses and a few really expensive ones.. but the majority are about $500 each..

which to me is kind of rediculous... I don't quiet understand university, to me its one big scam... you're basically paying for the title, the degree... Because how do they teach you in university? through textbooks... cant you just buy that same textbook and read it yourself for free? And then google what you dont know? and watch lectures on youtube about the topic? You can learn everything at home that you do in university... yet... they charge $500 per course? per semester? Thats BS...

In reality, you're just buying that degree... but there isn't any other option i suppose, its not like you can make your own school :p so we are forced to go if we want that degree..

    @ Ortus ^

Yeah, the cost really varies from school to school here (public vs private schools). Courses often cost more then $500 here. But I do agree with you man, it's not fair for our generation to be piled on with large amounts of debt, just to obtain a piece of paper.

Though, I do think college can be a great experience. It can definitely help further your knowledge about things..and you meet some interesting people and learn some interesting things along the way. For me, I just really wanted to get away from home and experience a totally new environment.

It sucks that most employers expect people to have at least bachelor degrees these days :( However, I feel it is important to at least get the degree...then it's basically a rat race to try and find a job. It really comes down to working hard and trying to stand out from the rest. Just gotta think outside the box and definitely try to establish some connections.
