I'm not sure what that means -Maybe it sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya00dMjOTyE"]Polvo - Taste Of Your Mind - YouTube
I was going to say Slint. I am not really a fan, though. Perhaps I need to give them another listen. I think math rock and post-rock are two very different things, though Slint would be the first example of both which immediately comes to mind.
I put math-rock and post -rock together because they both avoid the usual rockist poses of drugs and irresponsibility.
I suppose what connects the two genres together is Slint, who had a huge influence on both. But there's been plenty of bands over the years that took the best from both worlds. I'm not an expert on either genres by the way. Some post-rock artists: Flying Saucer Attack Bark Psychosis Mogwai GY!BE God Is an Astronaut Windy & Carl Talk Talk (later stuff) Hammock Jessica Bailiff Nadja Red Sparowes Some math rock artists: Polvo (as mentioned) Unwound Battles Lowercase BATS Drive Like Jehu
I know and like: Mogwai Talk Talk Unwound. I will check out some of your suggestions SilverScreen.Thanks.
when i hear math-rock i think of this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUF19MJWowM"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUF19MJWowM
I want to expand this thread to include post-punk and well...Just anything that sounds different really...Stuff that strays away from blues based and R'nB stylings...Not that I don't like those forms...Just a bit tired of that trip right now.
If you like post-punk you should check out Pity Sex and Slow Warm Death. As for mathrock, you can't really go wrong This Town Needs Guns, Giraffes Giraffes!, Clever Girl or Pretend. Also, if you're into this type of music you might like emo (no, not the fake metal kind of emo music), American Football, Mineral, The Appleseed Cast, The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, Old Gray and Texas Is The Reason are all great bands.
Forgot to add this: http://topshelfrecords.bandcamp.com/album/2013-sampler You'll probably find some bands you like on this album.
Thought you might like this in return... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhN3sDibNCg"]Mogwai - Mogwai Fear Satan - YouTube
This thread sucks.God I'm so Americanised.Like "Awesome" etc...Sounds so phoney coming from an English gentleman.Oh well,if you can't beat 'em - join 'em!
I don't know why so many videos have been disabled in this thread.Youtube is playing games with me.Zucks a fat one.
Mmmmm Hmmm, what the fuck is Math Rock? A label that just sounds try hard. Its 'math' because of things like time changes??? or dissonant chords? Jazz musos have been doing that for a century
I'm not an expert on "Math Rock".The concept just appeals to my nerdy side.I genuinely like bands like Polvo and Slint, who are two of the genres most notable exponents in my opinion.I suppose it's a kind of angular, jerky sound;kind of fighting against the grain of blues based rock from the inside out.And although it can be technical,it strangely allows non or inexpert musicians to try something new, without even having to even learn a blues scale. You can see the guitar visually.Like if I do this, and this,I will get that.I can make it up.Whatever I want. For free. It's kind of like a tight structure within a loose interpretation. Also different tunings to standard tunings. That's my pennies worth, anyway.
