people who work at mcdonalds work there because they need money.
they will work on christmas and any holiday, or every weekend or anything.
because fuck you, money is money.
when you need money, you do what you have to do
and fuck you self-righteous cunts that haven't lived hard.

I Guess Working On Xmas Day Would Attract Either

Double Or Triple The Standard Pay Rate, Sounds Good To Me...:)

When I was working for others, I usually filled a management positions, so holidays = no real extra $$ for me, just a straight 8 hours holiday pay. :(

BUT, when my wife was working retail and would work Christmas it was
time and a half pay +
    8 hours holiday pay =
    > $30 an hour

so earn about 3 days wages in one shift, sure, no brainer, just celebrate a different time.
Although it was harder when all the kids were little and expecting the traditional Christmas morning.

I see two conflicting things here- abuse of workers, who wish to have the holiday, with few options, one reason I support collective bargaining powers; and an obsession with keeping Europe and its former colonies wrapped in a Xtian mythos.

I worked in news a long time. I always volunteered for Xmas as it matters not to me. I usually had a deal that got one reporter out of three or four days at Xmas, and he covered me so I could go to new year shows, so Dec. 29- Jan. 1.
I also covered for him on big deal sporting events. He covered a day and a half for me at High Holidays.
The paper got out. Jobs got done. Two reporters were happy.

As for the franchisees, they sign on when they sign the contract. They buy into the corporate success, but also limitations (low quality product, employee turnover, restrictions on suppliers, sign rules...all of it).

The solution to this for me is in the hiring of the staff.

Why doesn't McDonald's just hire a perfect ratio of workers who are Christians or want to celebrate Christmas traditionally and also have a portion of the staff who don't celebrate Christmas fill in the shifts of that particular day?

The law can mandate that no harm no foul, to those who take the day off for RELIGIOUS purposes, if they want to keep their status as an equal opportunity employer.

It he states, that type of question is illegal.

However, a quick employee meeting asking for volunteers to work the holiday would allow for the folks who do midnight mass to get the evening of the 24th off, the morning present and breakfast folks to get the 25th off.
And for the ones who don't give a whit to get some hours and extra pay.
