I refuse to read anything by Ayn Rand. I cant remember off hand that other book of hers that the Repubs think is so great but they are wrecking our country.......I can think of a word to describe her....BITCH.

Why not just read Arthur C Clarke if you want good sci fi? He's a much better writer and his stories are quite engaging.

I'm currently reading Fountainhead, and I'm enjoying it.

the two biggest influences on 1984 were yevgeny zamyatin's "we" and Arthur Koestler's "Darkness at noon", i reccomend both.

In terms of political utopian/dystopian SF, my biggest reccomendations are Piercy's "woman on the edge of time", which is my favorite (and one of the most successful, in my view) non post-gender feminist utopia (with a dystopia in it as well). and "the dispossessed" which presents a capitalist state and an anarcho-syndicalist one and plays them off against each other.

i can't stand Ayn Rand. both in her views and her writing style

Ayn Rand has some...interesting ideas. I've read all of her books and the one thing I will say is that I love the way she writes. There's something about it which just really clicks with me. I don't agree with a lot of her ideas but I have enjoyed every one of her books.

I find it interesting that she took welfare the last part of her life.

Unfortunately, the monopoly of socialism has pretty much made all of us dependent on the regime for socialist security and mediscare. So you wish to ridicule her for that while in the meantime the barry squad has become addicted to snap cards and free phones and whatever else. Did she smoke cigarettes too?

Looks like "scratch" is having problems locating his link. As much as socialist drum majors want to cheer on revenue sharing ; there is no valid intellectual argument for involuntarily working for someone else. While the evil of guvmint coercion is everywhere the last thing we need are pro government suk-ups.

Pro gov suk up? hahhahhhahahahaa. I see no need for 1% suk-ups. They're doing quite well.

Just type her name in. It'll all come up.

I started reading Atlas Shrugged last summer but I never finished it because, well, it's fucking enormous.
There's so much hatred towards Ayn Rand but I can kind of understand why some would have a problem with her ideology. It is founded upon self-gain, carelessness and a strong "anything goes because I said so" kind of mentality and it clearly shows in the book (halfway through). I don't know what I think about that. I will hopefully finish it this summer.
I've heard so many great things about We the Living though!!! But that's a book for another thread :D

Edit: Hah! just realized I bumped this.

I've heard "The Fountainhead" is much better than "Atlas Shrugged".
Both are pretty contentious books though.

Obviously should be and is the credo for the republican party. The economic system is so out of whack right now because of greed, republican gifts to the 1%, the corona virus, the warming of the earth and the destruction caused results, the killing of unions by right wing , conservative greedy bastards, -----the system itself that is eating its self alive. She was a nasty C**T.
