    brief hijack
I've cruised the groovatron site (and I don't know how 144 gigs is "hard working") and I'm having trouble connecting to the sound... what are your recommendations, Rar?

    back to thread:
Hoping to hit Apogea or Dreamtime (kindof a Colorado burner pre-gathering)
planning on catching a lot close by (200 mi or less)
Kinda miss the long college breaks!
really hoping to get to Rockygrass.

well the guys play more like 200 some shows a year..on average there are 2 a week...and they guys all have a full time job..so they may get home from a show at 7 am and then have to work all day from 9*5...in my opinion that is hard working...they practice a few times a week...they r really dedicated to being successful...u may not dig the music..and that's ok...it's not for everyone...i dig every song every written or covered by the band...so..it's just ur personal taste...i'd recommend the entire 9/15/04 show..they opened up for the wailers..and it was a fun night...

well, if i had the money and the time (which i don't since i have to work and save save save!) i'd probably pick sci purely for the good vibes of their crowd. not a good as they used to be, but still a hell of a lot better than panic. man i love panic but i despise their crowd. only at spread shows have i had some drunk belligerent "fan" try to kick me in the face and start a fight with me for asking her to stop rolling all over me and my then boyfriend. of course not all panic fans are that way, but a gooooooood many are.

cheese fans are a lot mellower. :D

but moe. is my favorite band :) they have a pretty good crowd too, pretty mixed.

how do you guys get the money and resources and everything to tour? i've never been able to fathom it :)

I usually catch half, or abit more then half of moe. shows in a given tour--this is how I do it, in a brief way, to get you thinking...

    1) take a closer look at the completely necessary expenses...

    A) gas (consolidate this!) Maximize the # of riders, in the smallest vehicle they will all fit in for cheapest gas cost/person.
    B) Ticket cost--If you are going for completely cheapest possible way to do a show (as I always do, as I am very poor) This should be the most expensive portion of any given show by far.

As for other things which you may think are necessary for touring, however which arent.

    Food:

Bring your own food, if you are really cheap like I am sometimes, all you NEED to live for afew days is a loaf of bread, and peanut butter--its easy to get free cups of water just about anywhere. Loaf+Peanutbutter=5 bucks maby=3 days or so of food...

    Shelter:

You prolly got TO the show your at somehow--sleep in your car

Now, that is how to make the most of what little money you may have--Here is how to make $

I am not SAYING to do this, nor am I condoning anyone do it, but you can 'work' on tour, if you know what I mean. Make T-shirts, as far as profit margin, and sketch factor are concerned, this is really the best bet.

Second best margin for profit at a show, unless you have a really good hookup to start off with (in which case this is by far #1) is drugs. This in itself though requires a pretty large financial investment, if you are expecting to make lots on selling smaller quantities. Likewise, this is not only illegal vending, but it is also possession, and distribution of illegal substances which is no good either.

Anyways, those are afew things to think about...the only two REAL expenses, if you are willing to live hungry/tired/cold/whatever are gas, and ticket....everything else is not necessary, but is a nice thing to have it if can be afforded.

Come up with something creative to tour with to make some $, anything really...Like, I can tell you for moe. winter, spring, and summer tour, my friends friend owns this fake flower business where they make lots of fake flowers for abunch of companies or whatever, needless to say, said flowers cost like less then a quarter to produce, and my friends are planning on bringing ALOT of them on tour with them, and even if they each sell only like 10/show, that is still making 7.50 profit, which is prolly enough gas money to get to the next show. Every little bit counts, and touring for me atleast is all about making the most out of what little I have.

glad I'm not the only one who avoids Whitebread Panic's crowds...although the last show I caught (gads... spring 2001?) had a parking lot full of cheese music!

im deffinitly leaning toward moe. and selling hemp jewlry and food. SCI is cool as hell but i got discouraged in NJ over thanksgiving. SKETCHY! i dislike 10 year olds selling nitrous and other drugs. SCI is awsome but moe. has been my favorite for the past 5 or 6 years now. the first time i saw them they jamed throught both sets. When you see a band just non stop play for 2 120 minute sets it says somthing about the band.

well now that the dead sound dead

    and phish has phled
SCI turned into glam rock along time ago
panic never did it for me and i dont expect them to now
    where can we go . . .
well the last few years i like to mix it up with alot of festivals, short runs with band, random adventuring, maybe a gathering . . ., but i basically stick to myself. it will be awhile before there will be thousands of kids goin to the same 100 shows in a row together. theres alot of good music out there.
ive really not been into the drug scene or hard rock scene for a while, so youll prolly see me at the YMSB shows, keller williams, and at the festivals. theres alot of bands i do go to see if there in the neighborhood, or if im in theres, but if one of you fools suggest i pack my bags for umphrey mcgee tour i might laugh up a kidney.

I'm going to do moe. Did anyone catch the New Year's shows? INCREDIBLE!! on teh 2nd night they played she sends me in to stranger than fiction back in to she sends me and ended the set with rebubula. Then they just jammed with a few other songs the 2nd set. I was amazed! anyway, I have tons of money already saved and I'm working my ass off to save more for the summer. I'm kicking off tour season with Summer Camp in Chillicothe. Anyone remember last year? JEEZ! weather sux. in between moe. shows I want to see the Dead at least once (you never know when their tour will be their last) and a few cheese shows. hope to see you guys there!!

even though you hate me heady moe chick, please take me with you, i dont have a car no more! you know in the 8 or 9 years if seein moe., i still dont know any of thier songs names, or any of the musicians names, what kind of fan am i. but yall are right, moe is one of the few bands left gauraunteed to rock the house every night. panic might do it once a month, sometimes, but moe is tight. i hope they dont blow up too big.

I have to disagree about the dead, to me they sound better in their current incarnation then they did for jerry's last 5 years or so, though obviously nothing compared to the way they sounded before that. And I was never a huge panic fan but I've been listening to their halloween msg shows the last two days and they are pretty fucking tight. This last summer I did 4 dead shows in 5 days and csn on the off day my first "tour" experience and had a blast, I'm afriad who I'll end up seeing this summer will be based more on convenience and affordability (I have to work for most of the summer, and may have difficulty finding transportation as I don't own a car) than on who I'm really dying to see but hopefully they'll align somewhat. At this point, i'm more interested in hitting festivals and seeing a variety of bands than of seeing multiple shows of the same group although I did really love making friends in the lots and then knowing you'd see them at the next show

I'm pretty sure the allmans will be playing a few shows. I don't know any dates though or if they have even released them yet.

Sorry wayfaring stranger, my car is full. It's going to be be me, my man, my friend out in cali, and my cat. Can you make a cat a tour cat? He likes car rides. I figure we'll put his litter cage in the back and clean it out and let him run around at rest stops. I don't have anywhere to put him, and I don't want to give him to the humane society.

BTW.. why do you think I hate you? and if plans change... hey maybe I'll give ya a few rides. It all depends on who's still coming with me next summer.
