It's a good question. Short answer: cryptocurrency.

A bit longer answer: decentralised virtual currency based on a cryptographic mathematical protocol. It is open-source and bitcoins can be 'mined' by hardware that can make a certain amount of calculations, known as 'hashes'. The more hashing power you got, the more likely it is you can find a 'block' which contains bitcoins.
It can get a bit technical here, but basically it is virtual currency that is slowly getting more accepted everywhere. It is very volatile and deflationary. Only 21 million will ever exist. If you want to buy bitcoins, you don't have to buy a whole one, but you can also get fractions of a bitcoin, up to 8 decimals. You don't have to mine them yourself though, you can also buy them through exchanges or sell things for bitcoins etc.
At the time of writing, 1 bitcoin will sell for about $155.

I am aware people might think so, but bitcoin is not a pyramid scheme.
Bitcoin is not designed specifically to lose money. It is a form of investment and a currency, nobody will promise you anything and nobody will run off with your money.
Early adopters get rewarded because they believe in it. The same way early adopters, or investors, of for instance Microsoft got rewarded for their belief in it.
