I mean....from what I've heard, people say that Australia doesn't really have a real history. So do you have world history? Or are the others wrong. What do you learn??
we learn world history in years 7 and 8 and in year 9 and 10 we learn about aboriginals. there isnt actually any history in year 9 and 10 but i dont know the government thinks we should learn about our aboriginal heritage rather than learn history... we do actually have a bit of history with like white settlement and that. we have some 19th century buildings in sydney and hobart...
THanks! I've been wondering that for some time now... So the aborigines, eh? In America they learn mostly about their white history, having only itcy bitcy bit of indians in their chapter. Well thanks for the info! ^^
but since being in university i have learnt quite a bit more about australian history...the government also sees it as positive to have an overall "good history" rather than a correct history as such... but our history of aboriginals can be slightly biased in some accounts...historians really have a hard job because they are not just reporting facts but creating accounts in detail from things they have not actually ever experienced. i remember in primary school learning about the gold rush, convicts and overall settlement...also there is history on the white australia policy in the 1970's, and assimilation and so forth...more is being created, time will tell
Modern Australia started out as a few boatloads of convicts and soldiers payed with rum just over 200 years ago, to try and rid England of its social problems (an impossible feat anyway) There is a huge history in Australia, but since that time much of it has been lost and replaced by the white history. Australia actually remains a colony of the queen of England, who is our official head of state. Aboriginal people were only recognised legally as full human beings with the ability to vote in 1967! There is much dispute about the "true" history in Australia. Even though some of that white history is evident in drying rivers, salinity and soil degradation, and now chronic drought that threatens the water supply of major cities such as Perth, Adelaide and many smaller towns. A couple of books I think give an idea of our history would be Future Eaters by Tim Flannery (also made into a TV series and website http://www.abc.net.au/science/future/default.htm) this book covers the common and diverse natural and human history of Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, and New Zealand over the last ten thousand years or so. Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes (http://www.middlemiss.org/lit/australian/fatalshore.html) this is a huge book about the colonisation of Australia from the first fleet period. There are lots of other books and articles around these days, some might suggest that these two books give a less than pretty story about Australia, though I along with many others I think would argue they are truer. I'm not sure what history they teach in schools, that is the source of some debate and dispute in the public domain though. Every history book is influenced by those who published it and if you believe George Orwell in 1984, who controls the past controls the future, at least some people (politicians) in Australia argue strongly and appear to try this. At least the internet is a bit of jam in that mechanism.
Of course we have a history and it saddens me to here people tellin u we dont, everyone has a history...i am in yr 12 and studying Australian History...our history may not be as big as the history of other countries such as Europe but there is much of Australian European Settlement, Migration, Aboriginals, our involvement in both of the world wars, Vietnam...and it is as important as anyone elses, we do have a history i think a Big history at that...it is only small however when u compare it to other countries. If u are interested in learning more about the history of Australia i would love to inform u just give me a buzz. Living and Learning in Australia!!! I love It!! Peace!
