I worked 6 months in a cigar/magazine shop for supplemental income 20 yrs ago. I grew up in a small town in KY and had just moved to a medium sized city (Lexington, KY). My first night on the job I noticed a sign in the magazine section that said "No standing in the magazine section for more than 5 minutes". I never saw a sign like that before but did not think much of it. After a couple of weeks I finally asked someone about it. Like a dumb hick, I asked a female employee. She said it was because of the playboy and hustler magazines. I still did not get it until a month after I left when I went back to visit. It just hit me as I was in there talking. I guess they had trouble in the past to have had to put the sign up. Glad I wasn't there when it happened. I'm not sure if this can be classified as rude like in other posts but it had to have been a bad experience for whoever worked when a patron did their business their in the mag section.
Hello, what a bummer. Well, I try to be nice to other people, even though it's hard sometimes . Regards Gyro
My only job serving the public was when I worked in a public library in the circulation department for ten years. People would come in with bags of overdue books and pour them out onto the counter. The clerk had to handle each book one by one to check them in. The person would then tell you that the books were late because all their kids were sick. Suddenly you did not want to handle any of the books. On the flip side the same people would get in the checkout line with dozens of books and complain about how long the line was to check out. They had just come from the doctor with their child, that they had conveniently sat on the counter, and the doctor had told them to take the kid straight home. The kid was so sick that they had to get home but they had to stop off at the library first. I remember telling one woman that the lines were long because we had several staff out sick, probably because of all the germs that the patrons brought in. I think my comment went way over her head. DUH.
This thread has made me very glad that all I do for now is wash dishes. Don't have to deal with people! Although that'll hopefully change soon as I need to find a new job since business at my current place of employment is slowing down rather considerably. It used to be just Mondays and Tuesdays that the Cafe was closed. Now it's Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays which means I only get to work Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. So yeah, I think that it is time for me to find a new job. But this is a good thing because when I get a new job it means that I get to meet new people. Not that there is anything wrong with the people I work with currently. I am not saying that at all.
When i delivered pizzas it was more common to come across a nice and polite customer than a rude one. I can only think of one or two negative experiences with customers then. Although 9 out of 10 times there was nothing more than " that will be eight fifty five" ... " heres a ten keep the change". My first job was in an arcade and yeah i have some stories from those days. There where lots of great people there too but ohhh man there was some sleazeballs.
I once delivered a pizza to a guy wearing a skirt and he had some boots on that made him look like a genie
The town that the store was in was just named one of the top ten worst small towns (less than 20k people) in nj by a philadephia newspaper
Being a travel agent has shown me some fucking stupid customers. I had a lady booked to go to India, that knew 5 months before going that she needed to get her visa sorted, and called me up the day before flying out to say her visa still wasn't ready and wanted to know what to do to get her flight changed (it was going to cost $500 at that stage), and she chucked a massive spazz when I told her the price - hell, it wasn't me that decided it was going to cost that! The next day her daughter walked into one of our other branches and started going apeshit at the manager there about how our company was ripping off her pensioner mother. When it was pointed out that her mother was the idiot for leaving it until the day BEFORE she was due to fly out to change the date and not expecting a penalty from the airline, she backpedalled, but somehow decided it was still me somehow ripping off her mother. She took over the booking from her mother and was an utter bitch to deal with. Being in corporate travel the customers are SO much better. I don't miss retail at all. Customers make a business, but they fucking suck to deal with.
