People who post this or that in "my" country it would help if you filled in your 'location' in some intelligible fashion so we know where the hell you're talking about.

I always think of them as chicken slaughtering weirdos for religious purposes. They have strange voodoo sacrificial ceremonies and practices. Mostly, I believe this because of an X-File episode involving a possessed Roma family seeking after life glory or somesuch.
well to the best of my actual knowledge they're a european phenomina. in the western hemispher we had to invent our own. migrant workers, and of course the origeonal hippies. but neither of which have ever primarily traveled in organized carivans with their own internal political organization and all of that. i think the concept is kind of cool in a way, and in the future there may be travelling space colonies like that, and they would have to have that kind of self organizing to survive. there are of course people in the u.s. who's ancestors were travelling people, and some of whom maintain some of the old traditions. i don't know how many of those in europe today even actually do that. i know hitler hated them almost as much as the jews, though i have absolutely no clue as to why. probably just because they were convenient and not well enough militarily organized to fight back. for all i know, it may never have been more then a romatic fantasy, or not since the time of the renasaunsce anyway. at least, i've never met groups of people who would fit the description as i understand, or possibly missunderstand, it.
I'm not sure about the rest of the u.s., but here in ky I'd say they are looked down on by most people. I say that because most people in ky do not like people who are not like themselves. I don't know if there are Roma here but I'm pretty sure they would be as welcome as gays, atheists, negros, asians, native americans, norse gods, etc... It is kind of a mystery to me why most of those people don't dislike stupid rednecks or bible toting idiots...oh wait...
I live just west of Phoenix AZ USA , to my knowledge there are none around hear . We have do migrant farm workers , most of them behave them selvs . They're a product of gypsy culture. Thats what makes them gypsies. A culture that is pure scummishness. Saying their antics are just a product of environment could be taken as defending what they do. But it can't be defended. Poor people might decide they have to sell drugs and stuff. But they don't generally kidnap people's kids and things on a whim. Gypsies do. Because living in a caravan, they think they are beyond retribution. Amongst criminal fraternities, gypsies are consdiered the lowest of the low. Because they think they can ignore the moral codes others live by.
If someone wants to oil your driveway because they "just happen to have some left over from a job", read your palms, trim your trees, but have no equipment, or put linseed oil on your wood roof or re-point your bricks-------watch it. Not saying they're bad people. Just saying---watch it.
Yeah I mean gypsies "curses" typify the sort of people they are. Usually put on housewives etc who refused to buy stolen pots and pans, sold door to door. I mean its the sort of shit satanists get up to ie fucking up the most nervous and impressionable/innocent. There really is something demonic about them.
When I was in Lincoln City, Oregon back in the 70s, there were a bunch and some of my hippie friends were friends with them. They( the hippies) liked them a lot and the Roma sometimes showed up to play music at various events. I didn't know them other than to say hello, but they were liked and I never heard of any mischief on their part. They seemed to relate to the hippie lifestyle.
Well as you might guess, I'm not exactly best mates with any. But yes, I do know a fair bit about them and their ways. What I've seen etc. Prob more so than a fair few here. They have a choice how they wish to be portrayed to the outside world. Needless to say, they choose to be portrayed as pickpockets, thieves, and the like. So they lose any right to claim some sort of "prejudice" argument.
To a certain degree everybody is a product of their environment. I don't think we can compare Roma living in abject poverty in nothing more than a slum, having their children trafficked across Europe (evidenced in the documentary above) - to Roma/Travelers living in managed sites (see below). I'm sure somebody will say - yes, but the people living on campsites are not 'real' Gypsies. The only 'real' Gypsies are the ones in a white van half-inching the lead from the local church. I love this: ' Amongst criminal fraternities, gypsies are considered the lowest of the low. Because they think they can ignore the moral codes others live by.' - honour amongst thieves? What moral code are criminals living by? I think you might have been watching one too many Carry On Films (probably where you got all your cliches from). Types of Gypsy and traveller sites Permanent sites provide residents with a permanent home and operate in a similar way to council housing. Residents are responsible for paying rent, water, electricity and council tax bills. Transit sites can operate all year but only provide temporary accommodation for their residents, usually no more than three months. They have more basic facilities. Residents are responsible for paying rent, water and electricity. Temporary stopping places are usually used for less than 28 days, generally at times of peak demand such as when fairs and cultural celebrations are taking place. http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2011/jun/29/gypsy-sites-england-local-authority This series brings together all documents relating to the traveller caravan count (previously known as the gypsy and traveller caravan count). https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/gypsy-and-traveller-caravan-count

You'd be surprized at how even the smallest of crimes can be organized and while calling it 'morals' may be an overly romantic notion, there are rules and systems in place.
If we are speaking in generalities, I understand there might be to a certain degree. I seriously doubt, in modern Britain, there is such a thing as a hierarchy of the criminal fraternity...and a tangible pecking order (cliche No. 1). The crux of it was: ' kidnap people's kids and things on a whim' I can't remember the last time I heard of Gypsies (Roma or Travelers) being found to be kidnapping children (cliche No. 2). If we are speaking about the bog standard criminal/criminal fraternity - they key issue is (I would imagine): What are we getting out of it? Can we trust this person to do it (the first likely to override the second). He's suggesting that the majority, if not the all the rest, of the criminal community just don't think Gypsy criminals live by the same 'code'... (cliche No. 3) How could he possibly know? The idea that the majority of criminals have decided that: 'Gypsies are considered the lowest of the low.' (cliche No. 4) - is just a fanciful self indulgence, imho.
I live in Texas. I've been all over the place, and to my knowledge, I have never met a single Roma person. I have heard the term gypsy enough, generally to refer (usually favorably but sometimes not) to hippies or other travelers. But with ethnicities, like with baseball, I always root for the underdog. They are fine by me.
