The real guitar gods are those most proficient in their genre, plenty of guys playing classical, spanish, jazz and blues guitar that would shit over many of the guys from mainsteam successful bands that have been mentioned so far in this thread.

Floyd were more than just the handful of popular songs you regularly hear off three of their albums on FM radio. They did other albums, too, and a whole bunch of live material you've probably never heard. Gilmour had one of the most distinctive and atmospheric ways of playing, and few people have been able to successfully emulate that sound. Because a few of their songs are overplayed on the radio, it has no bearing on the band itself. If they were a shit band it would be one thing, but they weren't.

I generally tend to find just ignoring all of that kind of music to be the best approach.
