there's a program at my school for recent grads and they send you to china for either three months or a year (uhm three months) and when you come back you get an esl certificate that gives you the creential needed to teach esl over here. I am just curious as I wanted to do it last summer and my job is flexible enough to let me take off for a summer.
Well I live in Hong Kong, and since that's practically a part of China, i can say that i have taught english in Chinafor a few months haha, but the experience teaching down here in HK is quite different than up on the mainland. I have a few friends who have taught in China and most of them seem to agree that the workload is higher there, and there is not as much job satisfaction as HK. Still depends on which region in China they've taught though.
Hi I am teacher in Jiangxi province and I really like my job. Students are very kind and some of them can speak English very well. It is not always easy because most of the people don't understand english but it does not matter. I try to learn chinese but for the moment my chinese still bery low. Peace
check out dave's esl cafe at http://eslcafe.com/ It has a huge forum concerning teaching english in foreign countries.
Thank you for your response. What about South Korea? Do you know anyone who teaches there? How long of a flight is it from Seoul to Thailand? I know in China the goverment has the right to read your email and listen to your phone messages. Is the South Korean goverment similar? Do you work with adults or children? I am just curious.
also I know the sex trade is really big in asia and a lot of American girls get kidnapped. Is this true and if so in which countries is this a concern?
Haha, I think you must haven't been to China. I am living in Shanghai which is the largest city of China. You can see some pictures in attached. No people can read your email and listen to you phone messages. You must get wrong information. Anyway welcome to Shanghai.
Beautiful pictures! I actually submitted my application to a lanuage institute in Seoul, South Korea for september. I got my esl certificate years ago and completed my internship for my tesl and I get my BA next month as well so I qualify for some really good positions. Who knows if I could actually leave for an entire 1 year contract...I wish they had like 6 month positions but because of the e-2 visa process they don't ): Thanks for the pics, they're gorgeous.
thanks that's where I found the job I applied to. I had no idea there were so many americans over there!!! I just think it would be awesome to put my education to use for once. I used my certificates for 6 months total and hated it ): but it was the american schools I hated.
Actually now we're on the subject, has anyone done these advaanced TEFL's they offer abroad in language schools? http://www.teflcourse.net/hochiminh-location.htm I'm planning to do one in either Ho Chi Minh City or Bangkok. Also has anyone here actually managed to teach english and travel for a long period of time (like a few years) without ever running out of money? You see this is my dream, to just travel and teach english when I start running out of cash so i could technicaly remain on the road for years...
I don't know if they offer basic ones abroad in the international TEFL schools... But just do a search on the net typing in 'TEFL courses' and you'll get tonnes of results. You can even do them online at home in about 40 hours or something, but I don't like this idea at all. I feel you need the teaching practice to gain the confidence to teach in the classroom. I don't think you'd get a very good pick of jobs with an online TEFL or a basic one unless you're aiming to go to places where the amount of jobs available outnumber the teachers. This is why i'm just going for the advanced because the course sounds really intensive, you get lots of teaching practice and even learn some of the local langauge, plus i'm aiming for work in Lao at first which i'm imagining wont have as much work available as other countries so they can afford to be more picky... Oh and at the moment www.advancedtefl.com with i-to-i are knocking 50% off the course before October in Bangkok, Barcelona and San Jose.
Cheers for that Peter, that advancedtefl, looks like it could be the business! That's around the time I'll be hitting the road again. Might seriously consider doing this.
^^yeah ive met similar people who've been on the road for years. I couldn't imagine a better way to spend this life. Don't know what constitutes a 'good educational background' but I applied for the course in Saigon at www.teflcourse.net and they accepted me within 12 hours of my e-mail to them. They didn't even ask for my school or college qualifications (which are quite bad, 2 d's at AS level, 1 E at A level!) so I wouldn't pay much attention to them. I think if you are Irish, British, American, Canadian, Australian etc and have your basic school education you'll be fine. I think it's more of a case of if you have the money they'll accept you! I'm still deciding on where to do it even though i've been accepted in Saigon. This half price one in Bangkok is just becoming too tempting even though i'm not too keen on Bangkok...
